History

De Pere High School, 2004

The first high school in De Pere was built in 1930 at 650 South Michigan Street. In 1935, its gymnasium was one of the largest in the state. In 1978, the current high school was built at 1700 Chicago Street. It underwent major expansion in 2001, with the addition of a gymnasium and several classrooms. In January, 2007, more classrooms were added. De Pere High School was recently made a Green School by the school's environmental club.

FIRST Robotics

De Pere High school is home to FIRST robotics team Team 1716. The team has been in existence since 2006 and offers the opportunity for students interested in STEM to gain hands-on knowledge. [1]

History

During the 2006 season Team 1716 did well and boasted a win/lose/tie record of 6/7/1.[2] In the 2007-9 seasons, however, Team 1716 had did very poor at competition with records of 3/6/0,[3] 1/6/1[4] and 1/7/0.[5] In the 2010 season, however, the team lost all but 2 of its members to graduation, so under new student leadership and an almost entirely new team, 1716 pulled out a 7/4/1[6] record in Breakaway. After this successful season, Team 1716 got back on its feet and managed a 7/5/1[7] during the 2011 season. The 2012 Season (Rebound Rumble) was the best in Team 1716 history. Although Team 1716 had a record of 6/5/0, they finished with the #4 Seed, but got eliminated in the Quarterfinals due to a robot malfunction. Team 1716 was also awarded the Judge's Award. The 2013 and 2014 seasons, Redbird Robotics did not make it to the elimination rounds. In 2014, the team participated in more than one regional for the first time since the team's inception.

Athletics

De Pere High School is a member of the Fox River Classic Conference. In 1983, 2005, 2010 and 2012, the girls' basketball team won the Division 1 state championship. De Pere High School has also won state championships in boys' basketball (1934), boys' soccer (1993), football (1992), track and field, Bowling (2004) and gymnastics (1986–1990).

Mascot controversy

De Pere High School's mascot is the Redbird. In 2005, the school received a cease-and-desist order on the grounds that its mascot was copyrighted material of Illinois State University. The school eventually redesigned the logo so as to not violate the copyright.[8]
