Dayar-e-Dil (Urdu: دیار دل ; lit. The Valley of Heart) is a 2015 Pakistani romantic drama serial,[1] based on the novel of same name by Farhat Ishtiaq.[2] It is directed by Haseeb Hassan and produced by Momina Duraid. It stars Abid Ali, Sanam Saeed, Maya Ali, Osman Khalid Butt, Hareem Farooq, Mikaal Zulfiqar and Ali Rehman Khan in lead roles. It is narrated by Osman Khalid Butt in drop-back scenes.

The drama serial premiered on 17 March 2015 in Pakistan, with the prime slot of 8:00 pm every Tuesday[3] on the channel Hum TV.[4] The first episode of serial received positive reviews, mostly critics praising the location, cast and cinematography of serial.[5]

Premise

The story revolves around Agha Jan and his two sons Behroze and Suhaib. Behroze is engaged to Agha Jan's niece Arjumand since childhood but he refuses to accept this relation and wants to marry Rohi, who belongs to a middle-class family. Stuck to the decision Behroze leaves his father's house and Agha Jan announces that the wedding will take place as scheduled with his younger son Suhaib (who loves Laila). Arjumand denies to marry Suhaib, however after Agha Jan pressure she agrees. Both get married reluctantly, and Behroze marries Ruhina. Later Rohi gives Birth to Faarah and Anjumand gives Birth to Wali and Zarmeena.[6]

Wali and Farah, are both cousins (paternal cousins). After Sohaib understands feelings for Arjumand, an accident leads to his death, which puts Behroze in a very emotional state pressurizing Rohi to agree for Farah's marriage with Wali, since it was his brother's heart felt wish. Wali and Farah both get married and they barely know each other. Behroze meets an accident due to the Rohi's umbrage and his brother death, this make Rohi more aggressive and hatred towards, Agha Jaan. 18 years has passed and Faarah and Wali are now grown into mature adults, Farah never accepts her relation with Wali and wants to end it. Farah is interested in her maternal cousin Moeez who also happens to be her best friend. The dispute gets longer on the divorce and property issue, which makes Agha Jan fatally ill, who is a changed man now and wants Rohi and Farah back in their lives.[7]

Looking at Agha Jaan's health, Wali made an agreement with Faarah, that if she is ready to spend three months with Agha Jaan, he will divorce her. in between she gets to know that everything has changed and Agha Jaan is not the same person as he used to be. She makes amends for her misbehavior and falls in love with Wali, who first reluctantly thinks that she is doing because she doesn't want to hurt Agha Jan, but after the end of agreement he realizes and forgives her and both reunites.[6]

Bakhtiyar Khan / Agha Jaan, is a landlord and head of his family resides in Kohat. He has two sons Behorze Khan and Suhaib Khan. Behorze lives in Karachi and studies there, while Suhaib live with their father. Agha Jaan fix the marriage date of Behroze and Arjumand Beddar Khan (who is the daughter of Agha Jaan's brother Beddar Khan), as both were engaged since childhood. Meanwhile, Agha Jaan sent Suhaib to pick his friend's (Feroze Khan) daughter Laila Feroze Khan from her hostel. Both instantly like each other and fell in love. After reaching home for his marriage, Behroze misbehaved with Arjumand, while Suhaib sees that and ask Behorze about his late arrival. Behorze explains that he doesn't want to marry with Arjumand as he loves Ruhina, his classmate and he never accepts this engagement as both were child. Ruhina told her brother Tajamul that she is in love with Behorze, and wants to marry him, Tajamul shows reluctance because of Behroze's family status and rejects. Later, Behroze reveals to Agha Jaan about him and Ruhina, who furiously told him that only Arjumand will be his daughter in law.

After dispute with Aghan Jan, Behorze told Arjumand parents, that he has deep respect for Arjumand and for them but he can't marry her because he loves someone else, this leaves Arjumand and her parents in shock. In a fit of rage Agha Jaan order him to leave the house and cast him out from property, shock by this decision Behoroze left. Agha Jan ask Suhaib to marry Arjumand, which puts Arjumand and Suhaib in distress. Laila ask Suhaib to refuse to marry with Arjumand, but Suhaib explains that he loves Agha Jaan and cannot dissent. Later, Behorze visits Ruhina and told her that he has left the house for her. Ruhina ask her brother for marriage, who furiously rejects and ask Behorze that if he wants to marry, he has to agree his parents.

Ruhina told her brother that she will only marry Behorze and believes him that he will never hurt her, reluctant to his reservations Tajamul agrees for their marriage, but warns her that if anything goes wrong she will not be welcomed. Arjumand confront Suhaib about their marriage but both gets married as Agha Jan decided. Behroze and Ruhina also get married. Behroze took Ruhina to his friends apartment for few days, so that he would find time to arrange his own house. Suhaib and Laila bids adieu forever, as she understands feelings of Suhaib for his family.

Behroze and Ruhina shifts to their new home, Behroze tells Ruhina that after his MBA he will easily get job which would get them higher income. On the other hand, Arjumand and Suhaib are unhappy with their situation. She asks Suhaib not to keep his grace lower anymore as she is his wife now. Agha Jan calls for their reception (Walima). Behroze dreams of Agha Jan and regrets for his misbehaviour with him. He along with Ruhina goes to his house to make amends, but Agha Jan, insults Ruhina and praised Arjumand and Suhaib for their sacrifice. Agha Jan banish them and ask them not to come back ever again.

Broken by the visit of Behroze, Suhaib sobs over the decision of Agha Jaan for disposition him. Behorze gets a Job in his friends's Uncle firm and both celebrates as unintentionally Ruhina cynicism on Agha Jaan for insulting them, furious to this, Behorze warns her that he would not bare anything against his father. Suhaib and Arjumand are still resent to each other while they prepare to leave to Islamabad because of Suhaib's studies. Meanwhile, Rhunia gets pregnant, tense with this, she tells Behorze that they cannot afford a child under current circumstances, but, Behorze said he will take care of everything. Agha Jaan visits Suhaib and Arjumand and tells them to move on and start a new life. Later, Ruhina had a miscarriage due to some complications, she blames herself for the incident as she thinks that this happens because they hurt Agha Jaan and her brother. In hospital Ruhina's brother accidentally met Behroze and gets to know about incident, upon listening Tajamul forgives Ruhina and both reunites. While Behroze leaves disheartened for abandoning Agha Jaan.

Three months has passed. Suhaib and Arjumand returns to the Kohat, after the completion of Suhaib studies. In meanwhile Arjumand gets pregnant and shows no sign of happiness towards Suhaib. She curse him and their child for the oblige marriage and express her rage by saying that she want this child to be dead before its birth. Behoroze topped in his exams and gets a job with coruscate salary package and miscellaneous facilities. Still resent towards Suhaib, Arjumand finds no way to humiliate him and considered him responsible for ruining her life. Time passes and Arjumand confess her feelings for Suhaib and their child, Suhaib forgives her and Arjumand gives birth to their boy, who is later named Wali Suhaib Khan, by Agha Jaan. Satisfied with his life, Suhaib remembers his brother and their childhood memories, at the same time Behorze also vows for his brother and remembers how happy once they were.

Behroze remembers Agha Jaan but lies to Ruhina as he doesn't want to upset her. Arjumand and Suhaib promise to each other to forget their past and decided to throwback all the tensions. (One year has passed) Behroze and Ruhina are little resent to each other as she thinks that Behoroze keeps his problems to himself and doesn't share with her. Suhaib tries to help Behroze with money and send Gul Khan to keep an eye on them. Later, Ruhina gets pregnant and gives birth to a girl, later named Faarah Khan. Suhaib visits Lahore to see his niece but encounters Behroze who warns him to stay away from them and ask Suhaib not to help him ever again. After twenty years, Agha Jaan watches Wali on riding horse and praise him of being better rider then him and Suhaib.

Development

Dayar-e-Dil was developed by Hum TV's senior producer Momina Duraid of MD Productions, the channel hired the award-winning director Haseeb Hassan to direct the series. Story of serial is based on Farhat Ishtiaq's novel of the same name Dayar-e-Dil. Screenplay is also written by Ishtiaq while Script composing is done by Muhammad Wasi-ul-Din, with approximately of twenty three episodes. Song composition is done by Shani Haider while background music is given by Bilal Allah Ditta. The show approximately airs weekly episode for 35 - 40 (without commercials) minutes every Tuesday. There were several discussions laid on its time slot, previously it was announced that the show will air during Fridays replacing Sadqay Tumhare,[24] It was also reported that the series will starts its aring in April or May. However, due to promotional reasons the show was given a time slot of Tuesday, 8:00 pm and the pilot episode was released on 17 March 2015.[3]

Casting

Producer Momina Duraid choose, Sanam Saeed, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Maya Ali, Osman Khalid Butt, Hareem Farooq and Ali Rehman Khan to play the leading roles of Ruhina, Behroze, Faarah, Wali, Arjumand and SUhaib respectively while the story titular character Agha Jaan was decided to portray by Abid Ali.[25] Sanam Saeed who had been praised by her excellent role as Kashaf Murtaza in Zindagi Gulzar Hai was offered to play the role of Ruhina and Mikaal Zulfiqar is selected to play the role of Behoroze,[26] while Maya Ali and Osman Khalid Butt marked their third appearance together as a couple having previously acted in Aik Nayee Cinderella and Aunn Zara,[27] both shows tops the ratings charts.[28] This serial is a third television appearance of Ali Rehman Khan who were selected after his tremendous success in Muhabbat Ab Nahi Hugi. Behroze Sabzwari and Rasheed Naz were selected to play Ruhina's brother and Arjumand Father respectively. Sara Kashif who rose to stardom by Humsafar plays the young Arjumand.

Filming

The filming of drama serial begins in late September 2014 and was completed in the late March 2015.[29] Before completion, serial went on air with more than half episodes being already shoot. Teasers were released in February along with the OST of serial.[30] Shooting was extensively done in hills areas of Pakistan, production house choose Khaplu Palace for main shooting location, in Skardo, Gilgit–Baltistan while some of shot is being done in Lahore, Punjab.[31] In early of March, channel releases promos of serial which were heavily praised for their shooting locations and cast.[32]

Title song of Dayar-e-Dil known as Original Soundtrack was given by musician Shani Haider who also composed background score of serial with Bilal Allah Ditta. All lyrics were penned Sabir Zafar. The soundtrack consists of two songs, one in Urdu language and the other in Persian language.

Difference from the Novel

Main article: Dayar-e-Dil

Prior to adaptation, Dayar-e-Dil was a story comprises of 159 pages, which was published in Ishtiaq's book Mere Hamdam Mere Dost in July 2010. Book contains total of 308 pages with Dayar-e-Dil and book's title story. In the novella, only five characters has a major appearance even among five story revolves around only four characters, Agha Jaan, Wali, Farah and Ruhina. But in the Adaptation, the characters of Suhaib (Ali Rehman Khan)and Arjumand (Hareem Farooq) (named in novel as Amna), are briefly developed and both ha a lead story. While Arjumand's Father, were merely describe in novel but, in serial role was expanded to a brief appearance played by Rasheed Naz. Other characters, like Agha Jaan's friend and her daughter played by Eshita Mehboob were not mention in novel, but she played the love interest of Suhaib. According to the series, full introduction was shown in the starting episodes but in the novel the entire past was narrated by wali and was told in flashbacks. Moreover, in episode five it was revealed that Ruhina had miscarriage but in novel she gives birth to a daughter only once.

Critical Reception

The first episode of serial was praised heavily due to the shot of drama serial in hilly areas of Pakistan, specially praising directing, cinematography and production. Before its release it was among the top 7 drama serials, that was highly recommended by critics.[33][34]
