David Gottlob Jüngling, or David Yuengling, (i/ˈjɪŋlɪŋ/ YING-ling) was known for founding the D. G. Yuengling & Son brewery and brand of beer in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in the early 1800s, which still exists today.

Early life

David Gottlob Jüngling was born on March 2, 1808, in the village of Aldingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Today the village has been incorporated into the town of Remseck. His father was Friedrich Jüngling, born in Erdmannhausen, Germany. His mother Anna Maria Jüngling (née Wildermuth) was also born in Aldingen. Together Friedrich and Anna Maria had four boys and four girls, including David, brother Jakob and sister Christiane.[1] David was christened in Evangelisch, Aldingen Ludwigsburg, Neckarkreis, on March 4.[2]

In 1823, Jüngling immigrated to the United States, where he anglicized his name from Jüngling to Yuengling.[3] His sister Christiane Jüngling also immigrated to Pennsylvania while Jakob stayed in Germany to run the family brewery there.[1]

Main article: Yuengling

While in Pennsylvania, Yuengling built the first of the eventual D. G. Yuengling & Son breweries.

Yuengling was also "an active member of the Pottsville community"[4] and served on a number of boards. He was the first president of the Pottsville Gas Company and later served as a director of the Pottsville Water Company. He also donated $10,000 to the construction of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany in Pottsville and served as councilman on its board. As of March 2014, the equivalent dollar amount of purchasing power would be USD $281,000.00.[5] Yuengling was also a member of the Free Masons and of Der Deutsche Orden der Harugari (English: German Order of the Harugari), a mutual aid society for German immigrants.[1][4]

Around 1870, Yuengling had the John O'Hara House built in Pottsville. The house is a historic home that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is named for the author John O'Hara who lived in the home as a child.[6]

Family

Yuengling married Elizabeth Betz on February 14, 1831.[7] Elizabeth was the sister of John F. Betz, founder of the John F. Betz & Sons Brewery. Together Yuengling and Elizabeth had three sons and seven daughters. Yuengling and his wife are buried in the Charles Baber Cemetery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.[8][9]
