David Starfire is a producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. His signature fusion of world music with hip-hop and breakbeats has led to him becoming a veteran of the international festival circuit that includes performances at Burning Man, Coachella, Earthdance, and Lightning in a Bottle. Starfire is signed to San Francisco-based label Six Degrees Records.[1]
Early life
Of Creole descent, Starfire comes from a musical family. His grandfather, Oscar Rouzan, was a well known New Orleans horn player. His aunt, Wanda Rouzan, is a vocalist on the traditional jazz circuit.[2] Beginning with the guitar at a young age, Starfire was composing, producing, and recording songs on a four track and playing five instruments by the time he was seventeen.[3] As a member of industrial dance band Lesson Seven with vocalist Scott Crow and keyboardist Wynne Martin, Starfire and the Dallas-based group toured nationally with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Filter, and Skinny Puppy.
Career
Following a solo career and stints in several bands Starfire founded the group Cellophane Masses in San Francisco. Originally a studio project by Starfire, Cellophane Masses evolved into a live band following the success of the EP Suicide Love Songs (2000).[4] It was in San Francisco that Starfire developed an interest in world music and studied artists from the Middle East. His growing interest in world music coincided with a personal spiritual growth fostered through yoga and meditation. Starfire’s unique style of mixing Indian and Middle Eastern sounds with western music led to several DJ gigs in the West Coast and then beyond. In 2004 he was the first American breakbeat DJ to complete a DJ club tour throughout India. A seasoned festival veteran, Starfire has performed at large scale international festivals including Coachella, Burning Man, Earthdance, Winter Music Conference, Love Parade, Shambhala, and Lightning in a Bottle. He performs live both solo as well as part of an ensemble that includes supporting instrumental musicians, vocalists, bellydancers, and hoopers. Starfire’s music has been featured in video games and TV programs including Lie to Me, Outsourced, MTV, Showtime, and HBO. Considered a favorite in the belly dance community, Starfire’s music has featured on several belly dance DVD’s and CD’s.[2]
