David Pastrňák (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdavɪt ˈpastr̩ɲaːk]; born May 25, 1996) is a Czech professional ice hockey player. He is currently playing with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League. He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round (25th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Early life and playing career

Pastrňák's father wanted him to play hockey. Following a lengthy battle with cancer, his father died.[1] David accounts this as the reason why he began practicing and training so hard, to make it as a hockey player for his father.

During the 2011–12 season Pastrňák led the Czech U18 league with the most goals (41)[2] and most points (68).[3] It was announced that on July 15, 2014, the Bruins had signed him to a three-year entry-level contract.[4]

Pastrňák attended Bruins training camp for the 2014–15 season before being assigned to the Providence Bruins, the team's AHL affiliate, on October 7, 2014.

Pastrňák made his NHL debut with the Bruins on November 24, 2014, logging 7:53 of ice time in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored the first two goals of his NHL career against Ray Emery on January 10, 2015, as the initial pair of goals resulting in a 3-1 Bruins matinee road win over the Philadelphia Flyers.[5] On March 29, 2015, Pastrňák became the first teenaged Bruins player in the team's history to score an overtime, game-winning goal in regular season play, in a Bruins' 2-1 road win against the Carolina Hurricanes.[6] Pastrnak was one of two players from the 2014 NHL Entry Draft to play in more than 40 games the following season, and along with fellow rookie Ryan Spooner led the Bruins offence in the last 20 games of the season.[7]
