David Ong Kim Huat (Chinese: 王金发; born May 19, 1961) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the People's Action Party (PAP), he currently serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Ong also holds a job at RedDot Publishing. Residing in Singapore. He is married and has three children.
Early life and education
David Ong Kim Huat was born in Singapore on May 19, 1961,[1] to a police officer and his wife, a homemaker.[2] He grew up in a small housing flat in Queenstown[2] and attended Margaret Drive Primary School and Gan Eng Seng School. Ong graduated from Tanjong Katong Secondary Technological School in 1979, going on to obtain a degree from the University of Oregon in 1986.[1]
Career
Ong began his professional career in 1986 at CL Computers, which he left in 1989 to join American Express. In 1992, Ong crossed over to Visa International, followed by Reed Elsevier in 1995, and Planet Marketing in 1997, where he stayed on till 2007. From 2001 to 2007, Ong also worked at Publicis Groupe. Since 2007, he has been serving as RedDot Publishing's Managing Director.[1]
A member of the Singapore-based political party People's Action Party (PAP), Ong is currently a Member of Parliament for the Jurong GRC, as well as a member of the Jurong Town Council. Ong used to serve as a grassroots leader for the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Constituency.[2] In January 2012, Ong stated that he welcomed a planned cut in his salary, expressing, "Personally for me with the reduction of the MP allowance and remove the GDP Bonus [sic], I think it won't affect my performance at all, as an MP. I'm elected to serve the people of Singapore, my residents in Jurong GRC, and I'll continue to do that."[3]
Personal life
Ong's religion is Christianity. He is married with three children and has two brothers. He resides in Singapore.[2]
