David Edward Goldberg (born 1953) is an American computer scientist, civil engineer, and professor at the department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering (IESE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is most noted for his seminal works in the field of genetic algorithms. He is the director of Illinois genetic algorithms laboratory[1] (IlliGAL) and also the chief scientist of Nextumi Inc.[2] He is also the author of "Genetic Algorithms for Search, Optimization, and Machine Learning", which is one of the most cited books in computer science.[3]

Early life and education

David E. Goldberg received a PhD degree in civil engineering in 1983 from University of Michigan and his advisors were E. Benjamin Wylie[4] and John Henry Holland. He is one of the most connected scientists in the evolutionary computation field, having collaborated, among others, with Kalyanmoy Deb, Jeff Horn, and Hillol Kargupta.

In 2003 David Goldberg was appointed as the first holder of Jerry S. Dobrovolny Professorship in Entrepreneurial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.[5]

Goldberg grew up in Minneapolis, the son of an successful Law school Professor he went into Harvard from where he obtained a undergrad degree in history and government Planning. He intented on enrolling into Harvard Law school after a two two year Hiatus However after working for Bain he decide against joining Harvard.

Career

After working for Bain Capital and living in Boston, Sydney, and . Joined Capitol Records in L.A. where he persuaded his company to sell its Beatles catalog on CD and helped the company double sales.After which he founded Launch Media for which he was successful at raising $100,000 at a 1 million dollar evaluation which sold a an electronic magazine of sorts, distributed monthly by CD-ROM. It contained interviews and live music, but it didn't actually sell the music. It was supported by ads.Becoming one of the first companies to Venture Into Online advertisement which was fairly new in the early days of the PC revolution and gradually the company expanded an d at the peak of the Internet Bubble was worth Nearly $300 million soon after he entered into negotiation with Yahoo to acquire Lauanch media However when the bubble Burst his companies value plummeted by 91% whereas Yahoo by 94% after soon the deal completed and they received stock options worth total of $15 million.

And with his Company David Joined Yahoo where he worked for 6 consecutive years in its music unit after Terry semel was appointed as its new CEO where he and his team built a music site which at its peak had 60 million unique users in 2006, they had over 5 billion music videos a year and they we built a subscription music product that had well over half a million subscribers.and while at Yahoo he started dating his wife ,Sheryl Kara Sandberg.Soon after he Joined Survey Monkey as its CEO and in 2012 as part of its $350 million debt financing package, the company released annual 2012 revenues of $113 million and $62 million in profits.[6]
