David Oliver Abel (born 1935) is a retired Brigadier General in the Myanmar Army and a former cabinet minister, posts in the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.[2] He attended the British Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) from 1952 to 1955.[3] He was considered the country's economic czar throughout the 1990s.[4] Abel retired from the State Peace and Development Council and vacated his position as the Minister of the Chairman's Office on 25 August 2003.[5]
He is a Roman Catholic of Anglo-Burman heritage.[6][7] Abel's father is an Indian Catholic, but he does have some Jewish ancestry.[4]
