Davichi (Hangul: 다비치) is a South Korean pop-ballad duo that consists of Lee Haeri (이해리) and Kang Minkyung (강민경). The duo was formed in 2008 by Mnet Media.[1] Davichi was derived from the word "Dabichi" which means the light to shine over the world, illustrating their voices to be spread over the world, explained by Lee Haeri during one of the episodes of Pops In Seoul.
Career
2008–10: Amaranth, Davichi in Wonderland and Innocence
The duo released their debut studio album, Amaranth, on February 4, 2008. The promotional track "I Hate You, I Love You" won 'Rookie of the Month (February)' from the Cyworld Digital Music Awards. After finishing promotions for "I Hate You, I Love You", the duo went on to begin promotions for the song "Sad Promise". On July 8, 2008, the duo released a repackaged edition of their first album, Vivid Summer Edition, with "Love and War" as the promotional single.
In the final months of 2008, Davichi won 'Best New Artist' at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, Golden Disk Awards, and the Seoul Music Awards.[2][3][4]
On March 5, 2009, Davichi released their first extended play, Davichi in Wonderland, with the lead single "8282". The song proved to be popular among the general public and continued Davichi's chart success.
On April 30, 2010, it was announced that Davichi would be releasing their second EP, Innocence, with the lead single "Time, Please Stop".[5] On May 6, 2010, Davichi's second mini-album was released to the public.[6] The music video to the lead single, "Time, Please Stop", which featured T-ara's Eunjung, was released three days later.
2011–2012: Love Delight
On August 16, 2011, it was announced that Davichi would be releasing their third extended play, Love Delight, later in the month.[7] On August 27, 2011, it was revealed by Davichi's label, Core Contents Media, that the entire Love Delight album had been leaked on the internet. Despite the leak quickly making its way through internet portal sites, the company chose not to change the release date.[8] On August 29, 2011, Davich released their third mini-album, as well as the music video to their lead single, "Don't Say Goodbye".[9] The song went on to chart at number one on Korea's Gaon Digital Chart and the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks.[10]
On October 7, 2012, it was announced that the members of Davichi would be leaving their label to form an independent company.[11] However, less than one month later, it was revealed that the duo retracted their decision to leave Core Contents Media and re-newed their contracts.[12]
2013: Mystic Ballad, Be Warmed, Memories of Summer & Code
On February 27, 2013, Davichi released jacket photos for their second studio album, Mystic Ballad. The jacket photos informed fans that the album would be released on March 20, 2013, and that the duo would be working with artists Duble Sidekick, Verbal Jint, Jung Suk Won and Ryu Jae Hyun.[13] On March 3, 2013, Davichi pre-released the music video for the track, "Turtle", which featured 5dolls member Hyoyoung.[14] The song quickly climbed real-time charts and placed number one on South Korea's Gaon Single Chart.[15] On March 18, 2013, Davichi released the music video for their title track, "Just the Two of Us".[16] Their second studio album, Mystic Ballad, was released hours later and quickly topped South Korea's digital real-time charts.[17] Promotions for "Just the Two of Us" began on the March 21, 2013, broadcast of M! Countdown.[18] On March 28, 2013, "Just the Two of Us" achieved the number one spot on M! Countdown, securing Davichi's fifteenth televised music show win.[19]
On April 1, 2013, Davichi released the digital single "Be Warmed (feat. Verbal Jint)", as well as the accompanying music video.[20] The song was originally listed on the track listing for Mystic Ballad, but was taken out for unknown reasons.[21] The song was met with instant success in South Korea, and even managed to place number one on every single digital real time charting, obtaining the coveted 'all-kill'.[22]
On June 27, 2013, it was announced that Davichi would be returning with a digital single album on July 4, 2013. The single, Memories of Summer, contained the title track "Because I Miss You Today", which was produced by Choi Kyu Sung.[23]
On November 4, 2013, Davichi announced they would be returning with Code on November 12. The duo revealed their jacket image on the same day, showing off a new mature and chic concept.[24]
