David Gabe "Dave" Pilipovich (born January 28, 1964) is an American college basketball coach and current head coach of the Air Force Academy Falcons men's basketball team.
Coaching career
Early years
Pilipovich began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at California University (Pa.) before being named an assistant coach in 1988. He subsequently served as an assistant or associate head coach at Florida Atlantic University, Georgia State University, Robert Morris University and Eastern Michigan University.[1] In total, Pilipovich has spent 26 years as an assistant coach.
University of Michigan
Prior to joining Air Force, Pilipovich spent two years under Tommy Amaker with the University of Michigan's basketball program.[2]
Air Force Academy
Prior to becoming head coach, Pilipovich spent five years as an assistant with the Falcons.[3] Following the 2009-10 season, the Falcons appeared in the post-season collegeinsider.com tournament. This was the Falcons first post-season tournament since 2007.
Pilipovich became the head coach at Air Force in February 2012 after Jeff Reynolds was relieved of his duties. In his first year as head coach, Pilipovich led the Falcons to a 58-56 victory over then 13th-ranked San Diego State, marking Air Force's first-ever win against a Top 20 team and just its second win over a ranked opponent.[1][3] Pilipovichwon two of his first three games as Air Force’s head coach.
In the 2012-13 season, the Pilipovich led the Falcons won the fourth-most wins in one season in program history, appeared in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament and achieved the first post-season road win in school history with a 69-65 victory at Hawai'i.[4][5] Pilipovich also became the first AFA head coach to beat two ranked teams in the same season and owns three of AFA's four wins against ranked opponents, including an 89-88 win over the twelfth ranked New Mexico.[1]
Personal
Pilipovich is married to Kelly and has two children, Kyle and Kelsey. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Thiel College and a Master’s in geography and regional planning from California University of Pennsylvania.[1] Pilipovich is also of Serbian descent.[6]
