Daugavpils University (Latvian: Daugavpils Universitāte) is a public university in Daugavpils, Latvia, and the largest regional university in the country.

Daugavpils University (DU) was founded in 1921 as Teachers’ seminary. In October 13th, 2001, Daugavpils University received its’ present name. Daugavpils University has become the biggest state educational institution in Eastern Latvia, which offers to achieve higher education of all scientific grades, acceptable in Europe and all over the world.

Five faculties in Daugavpils University - Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Faculty of Music and Arts and Faculty of Education and Management - are represented by 51 study programmes that train biologists, programming engineers, physicists, intercultural relations managers, institutional managers, economists, psychologists, artists, linguists, interpreters, career consultants and other specialists. All programmes, realized in Daugavpils University, are licensed and accredited that guarantees their state, European and worldwide approval. Daugavpils university diploma has been certified by European Commission.

The main research disciplines of DU scientists are Literary Science, Linguistics, History, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Economy, Sociology, Psychology, Education and Art. DU has thirteen research centres, alomost all of them have allocated the means of various EU projects and have purchased modern equipment (e.g. ZEISS laser scanning microscopes), which allows to conduct high level research in various fields.

DU has long traditions of organizing various conferences, e.g. Scientific Readings, Slavonic Readings, various thematic conferences in all branches of science.

DU has an advantage to be located in multicultural environment. We cooperate with various institutions worldwide. Students of Daugavpils University have many opportunities to study and practise abroad, getting an extra experience and a new view on knowledge received in Daugavpils University. Students can use Erasmus + mobility options to study for one or two semesters at one of the European partner universities of Daugavpils University. Students are able to receive Else Marie Tschermak foundation’s funding to study or participate in different activities of high importance abroad.

Our students have a wide range of possibilities to fulfil themselves not only in studies, but also in different activities, working in Students’ Council, Student’s Journal “Lai Top!”, Latgale Students’ Centre, joining The Association of Young Scientists of Daugavpils University “DUJZA”, Art Teacher Union, Health Care Centre, Natural Research and Environmental Education Centre. Students can also obtain a foreign language, take part in students’ dance ensemble “Laima” and do sports at the Sport Complex of Daugavpils University. Every student, inquisitive and interested in science, has an opportunity to work in research Institutions and centres, to participate in scientific festivals or international conferences.
