Winston Churchill and King Daudi watching a war-dance at Kampala in 1907

Since he was enthroned at age one year, he ruled through regents (including Apolo Kagwa) until he attained the age of 18 years. He assumed full Kabaka responsibilities on 5 August 1914. From available accounts, Sir Daudi was a popular king, who was fair, responsible and pragmatic. During his reign, the religious wars abated, the freedom of choice of religion returned to the kingdom, and relations with Britain, the colonial power improved. The Kabaka adopted the Protestant faith and was baptised Daudi, which is the Luganda version of David.
