DataXu is a provider of programmatic marketing software for brands and agencies. The DataXu Platform is cloud-based software that leverages data science and machine learning to optimize return on marketing investment (ROMI). DataXu uses combinatorial algorithms originally developed for guiding NASA’s Mars mission plans by PhD student and company co-founder, Willard Simmons, at the MIT aeronautics and astronautics lab of Professor Ed Crawley.[4]

The company works with business customers using display, mobile, video, and social marketing channels, in industries such as automobiles, consumer goods, and financial services.[5]

History and Overview

Headquartered in Boston, MA, USA, DataXu was founded by Mike Baker, R. Bruce Journey, Dr. Willard Simmons, and Sandro Catanzaro in 2009.[2] Since its incorporation, DataXu has raised $55.8 million[6] and had a reported revenue of $118 million in 2013.[7] The company is backed by Thomvest Partners, Atlas Venture, Flybridge Capital Partners and Menlo Ventures.[6] The DataXu Platform sees 800,000 opportunities to buy ads every second—50 billion a day.[8] DataXu has 11 offices in eight countries.

In 2011, DataXu co-founded the OpenRTB consortium (now the RTB Project) whose standard for programmatic media was adopted by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and is in use in more than 80 companies.[8][9]

DataXu was ranked the "#5 fastest growing private company'", and the "#1 fastest growing private company in the marketing and advertising industry" both in the U.S. by Inc. in the annual Inc. 500 in 2013.[10][11] In the same year, DataXu co-founder and CEO Mike Baker was named "Entrepreneur of the Year, New England Region" by Ernst & Young.[12]

Since its inception, DataXu has acquired two companies, Mexad (January 2012) [13] and JasperLabs (April 2014).[14]
