Darsi is a town, Mandal (administrative division) and assembly constituency of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Prakasam district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is under Kandukur Revenue division.[1]

Geography

Darsi is located on Addanki - Podili Road. it is 15°46′00″N 79°41′00″E / 15.7667°N 79.6833°E in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. The town has a population of approximately 23,487.[2]

Darsi is the centre of a predominantly agricultural area. Kurichedu, 20 kilometres away, is the nearest railway station, on the Vijayawada-Guntakal railway line in the Guntur division of the South Central Railway[3][4] and the nearest major station is at Ongole, 70 kilometres away. The nearest major airport is at Hyderabad which is at a distance of 300 kilometres.[2] A new railway project has been taken up by the government to reduce the rainy season problems with the track nearer to sea shore.There is a small, reportedly disused, airport, Donakonda Airport, dating from the Second World War, at Donakanda, some 20 kilometres from Darsi. The town has water facility from Nagarjunasagar Right Canal. The Canal also supports Irrigation.

History

In the third and fourth centuries, in the early years of the Pallava dynasty, who originated from the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh, Darsi was one of the major centres of activity in the kingdom.

In the 18th century Darsi was known as Darsanapuram. At that time the kings were buried on the hill at Darsi. They are actually the rulers of Addanki & the surrounding area.

Famous temples in Darsi: Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple: 7 km from Darsi (towards Kurchedu) Sri Ramalayam: near the Addanki bus stand in Darsi Sri Sivalayam  : located at the end of the Pottisreramulu Road Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple: The main temple is near Panchayathi office and other one located nearer to Darsi Government Hospital. Sri Veera Bramhendra Swamy temple: There are two temples located in Potti sriramulu Street Poleramma Thalli: Located near the Darsi bus stand Ayyappa Swamy temple: Nearer to the Darsi bus stand (Depot) Sri Shridy Sai Baba Temple: 2 km from Darsi (towards Addanki) Kanyaka Parameswari Temple:Sri Arya Vysya Kalyana Mantapam (located nearer to Sivalayam). The clock tower at the junction of four roads is rightly placed for traffic purposes.

Assembly constituency

Darsi is an assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh, one of 12 in Prakasham district. In last elections, TDP candidate Sidda Raghava Rao won by a margin of 1374 votes on Buchepalli Siva Prasad Reddy. Dirisala Ramanareddy was first Chairman of Prakasam Zilla Parishad in 1970 till his last days.
