Daniel James McBreen (born 23 April 1977) is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for Hong Kong Premier League club South China.

Club career

McBreen was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England but moved to Australia six weeks later after his father took up an offer to play football for the Edgeworth Eagles.[2][3] He was raised in Newcastle, New South Wales and played for Toronto Awaba Stags and Edgeworth Eagles,[4] before earning a full-time contract with Newcastle United of the National Soccer League in 2000.[2][5] He signed for FC Universitatea Craiova on a long-term contact in 2002, although he later said the move was "a bad mistake".[2] He walked out on the club in 2004 after they refused to honour his contractual obligations.[6] He signed for Falkirk in the Scottish First Division after receiving international clearance in September 2004.[7] He signed a new one-year contract with the club in June 2005.[8]

He signed for League One team Scunthorpe United on a two-year contract on a free transfer in August 2006.[9] At the end of the 2006–07 season, McBreen was told by Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins that he was free to look for a deal with another club, despite having a year remaining on his contract.[10] He joined Conference Premier team York City on a one-month loan, with the option of a possible extension, on 5 October 2007.[11] His York debut came in a 4–1 defeat against Histon and scored his first goal in the following game against Stafford Rangers, which was the second goal in a 2–0 victory.[12][13] After making five appearances and scoring two goals he was recalled from his loan spell by Scunthorpe on 5 November due to the departure of on-loan Millwall striker Ben May.[14][15] Despite this, York manager Billy McEwan was interested in bringing McBreen back to the club for another loan spell.[16]

He joined St. Johnstone in January 2008 on a deal until the end of the season on a permanent deal; not a loan, as previously thought.[17] On 20 April, McBreen scored the opening goal in St. Johnstone's Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers of the Scottish Premier League at Hampden Park in extra time, which they eventually lost in a penalty shootout.[18] He was released by the club at the end of the 2007–08 season.[19] He held talks with A-League side Adelaide United and was later handed a trial with Wellington Phoenix,[20][21] but he returned to York City on 25 June.[22] His first game back at the club resulted in a 1–0 victory against Crawley Town and in his third appearance he scored his first goal of the 2008–09 season with the equalising goal in a 1–1 draw against Histon.[23][24] He suffered from a sore knee after waking up on 24 August, which led to him missing York's game against Barrow the following day.[25] He eventually made his return three days later by starting in the 1–1 draw against Torquay United.[26] McBreen was played primarily as a lone striker in away matches during the season, a decision which York manager Colin Walker defended in September.[27]

He was reported to have signed for A-League newcomers North Queensland Fury on 17 February 2009,[28] but the deal had yet to be confirmed by York.[29] It was confirmed that he would join the Fury at the start of the 2009–10 season in August, following the expiry of his contract at York in June.[30] He started in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium on 9 May 2009, which York lost 2–0 to Stevenage Borough.[31] He was released by York following the end of the 2008–09 season,[32] during which he made 48 appearances and scored 10 goals.[33]

He went on to sign a two-year pre-contract with A-League opponents Central Coast Mariners, for the 2010–11 season and 2011–12 seasons.[34] On 12 January 2010, McBreen signed an interim deal with Perth Glory for the remainder of the 2009–10 season in a swap for Jimmy Downey.[35] In the 2012–13 A-League season, McBreen won the Golden Boot with 17 goals, Joe Marston Medal and Members' Player of the Year awards. On 13 May 2013, he signed a new one-year contract with Central Coast Mariners.

On 8 June 2013, McBreen joined Chinese Super League side Shanghai Dongya on loan until 31 October, joining his former teammate Bernie Ibini-Isei who completed his transfer four days earlier.[36]

On 31 January 2014, McBreen signed with Shanghai Dongya on a one season contract for a transfer fee of AU$250,000.[37]

On 21 January 2015, McBreen signed with South China for the remainder of the 2014-15 season.[38]

International career

Australia coach Pim Verbeek selected McBreen in an extended squad of 25 players for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Brisbane on 3 March 2010. The Socceros drew with Indonesia the last time they clashed in the opening match of the Asian Cup qualifiers in Jakarta, Indonesia.[39]
