Daniel Carney

Daniel Carney (1944–1987) was a Rhodesian novelist.^[1] Three of his novels have been made into films. He is a brother of Erin Pizzey, also a writer.^[2]

Biography

Daniel Carney was born in Beirut in 1944, a son of British diplomat.^[3] In 1963, he settled in Rhodesia and joined the British South Africa Police, where he served for three and a half years. In 1968, he co-founded the real-estate firm Fox and Carney in Salisbury, Rhodesia. He died in 1987.

After his death, ownership rights of his novels and the films based on them passed to his family. They have consistently withheld permission to reproduce Daniel's novels, and have opposed re-release or sales of the movies based on the novels. In 2005, Tango Entertainment released a 30th anniversary edition of The Wild Geese (1978). The film had been hit by the collapse of its American distributor Allied Artists. As a result, the film was only partially distributed in the United States, where it was a box-office disappointment, despite being the fourteenth highest grossing film, worldwide, of 1978.

• The Whispering Death (1969), ISBN 0-552-11353-0, made into a movie by the name Whispering Death a.k.a. Night of the Askaris a.k.a. Albino.^[4] Set in Rhodesia.
• The Wild Geese (1977) (originally titled The Thin White Line) ISBN 0-552-10869-3, made into a film with a screenplay by Reginald Rose (author of 12 Angry Men).^[5] It was set in a fictitious African country.
• Under a Raging Sky (1980). Set in Rhodesia. The film was optioned by Euan Lloyd, producer of The Wild Geese and Wild Geese II, but was not filmed.^[6]
• The Square Circle (1982) (republished as The Wild Geese II and The Return of the Wild Geese ISBN 0-553-25380-8), made into a movie by the name of Wild Geese II.^[7] Set in Germany.
• Macau (1985), ISBN 0-917-65710-1, Set in Macau.
