Dandupalya (film)

Dandupalya (Kannada: ದಂಡುಪಾಳ್ಯ) is a 2012 Indian Kannada crime film, starring Pooja Gandhi and Raghu Mukherjee in the leading roles. The plot is based on the real-life exploits of a notorious gang named Dandupalya.^[1] The film was directed by Srinivasa Raju and produced by Girish and Prashanth under the Apple Blossom Creations banner.^[2] The film was later dubbed in Telugu as Dandupalyam and in Tamil as Karimedu.

Controversy

The film criticised by social group Bahujan Samaj Horata Samiti, who claimed that its content was offensive. They objected particularly to the film's portrayal of women. Further controversy followed when it was revealed that actress Pooja Gandhi would appear topless in the film.^[1]

After the release of the movie, Ambedkar Kranthi Sena activists demonstrated in Bangalore against the film's "glorification of anti-social activities."^[3]

Soundtrack

Release and reception

Dandupalya received generally positive response from critics upon its theatrical release. The Times of India awarded the film 3 stars out of 5, praising the performances of Pooja Gandhi, Makarand Deshapande, Ravi Kale and Ravishankar.^[4] The film received excellent returns on its opening week across Karnataka state.^[5]

Dubbed Versions

The film was dubbed in Telugu and released as Dandupalyam. It was well received in Andhra Pradesh.^[9]

A Tamil dub titled Karimedu was produced by Rama Narayanan's Sri Thenandal Films and released on 24 May 2013 to critical acclaim.^[10][11]

The film was dubbed in Malayalam and was titled as Kuruthikalam
