Daniel Paul "Dan" Amos (born 13 August 1951 in Pensacola, Florida) is the chairman and chief executive officer of Aflac and Aflac Incorporated.[1] He is son of Aflac co-founder Paul Amos, and he joined the company in 1973,[1] working in sales for ten years,[1] during which time, he was the Company’s top sales person.[1] He was named president of Aflac in 1983,[1] chief operating officer in 1987,[1] chief executive officer of Aflac Incorporated in 1990(2), and chairman in 2001(3). Aflac, a Fortune 500 company,[1] insures more than 50 million people worldwide.[1] It is the leading provider of individual insurance policies offered at the worksite in the United States[1] and is the largest life insurer in Japan in terms of individual policies in force.[1]

During Mr. Amos’s tenure as CEO, revenues at Aflac have grown from $2.7 billion in 1990 to $23.9 billion as of December 31, 2013.[1] The Company has appeared on Fortune’s Most Admired Companies list every year since 2001.[2] Aflac has also appeared on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 16 consecutive years.[3] Aflac is the only insurance company to be listed as an Ethisphere Magazine World’s Most Ethical Company eight times, or every year since the inception of the award in 2007.[4] Amos received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Award and the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League.[5] He has been named as one of America's Best CEOs by Institutional Investor magazine five times[6] and has appeared on Chief Executive Magazine’s annual Wealth Creation Index.[7]

In 2000, Amos was the executive who green-lighted the company's national advertising campaign featuring the Aflac Duck, a concept proposed by Kaplan Thaler Group, an advertising agency based in New York City.[8] The campaign is credited from taking Aflac’s national brand name recognition from roughly 10% to above 90%.[9]

In 2008, Aflac became the first major U.S. firm to voluntarily afford shareholders an advisory vote on executive pay packages, including that of the CEO.[10] Shareholders supported the company’s executive compensation packages annually from 2008 to 2013, with approval rates ranging from 93 percent to 98 percent.[11]

Amos is a member of the board of trustees of the House of Mercy of Columbus.[12] He previously served as a member of the Consumer Affairs Advisory Committee of the Securities and Exchange Commission.[12] He is the former chairman of the board of The Japan America Society of Georgia[12] and former chairman of the University of Georgia Foundation.[12] Mr. Amos holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia with a focus on risk management.[12]
