Damian Grabowski (born May 12, 1980) is a Polish mixed martial artist. He fights in the heavyweight division and competed for various European MMA promotions, gathering a perfect record of twelve wins in a streak, all by stoppage, with four of them earned in a one-night sixteen men heavyweight tournament, before signing with Bellator. Grabowski is a multiple Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion of Poland, vice champion of the world and Europe champion. According to the global-mma.com rankings, he is the number 5 ranked fighter in the world (outside of the UFC).
Biography
Grabowski comes from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling background, having much success in those disciplines. Damian is currently ranked as #1 Polish Heavyweight Mixed Martial Artist by MMAROCKS.PL [1] and #1 European Heavyweight Mixed Martial Artist by groundandpound.de [2]
Mixed martial arts career
Grabowski defeated Kiril Handzhiyski at FX3 on June 13 in London (a last-minute replacement for Gary Rawlings).
Damian was then scheduled to fight PRIDE veteran Valentijn Overeem at a Beast of the East event in November in Gdynia, Poland and also Thorsten Kronz (known from Team Germany on M-1) on December 5 in Darmstadt, Germany on Mix Fight Gala IX.
[3] [4] Damian sustained a shoulder injury during training just a few days before the Overeem fight and had to drop out of both.
He recently returned with a first-round armbar win against Dion Staring and then fought at BOTE - Gdynia II in June against Michał Kita to determine the best heavyweight fighter in Poland. After connecting with a powerful upkick that cut the eyebrow of Kita, who slipped, falling out of the ring, Damian was declared the winner by doctor stoppage due to a heavily swollen eye.[5]
MMAROCKS.PL first announced that Damian signed a contract with Bellator FC and will compete in their heavyweight tournament at Bellator XXV in August 2010.[6] His opponent in the first round was Scott Barrett [7] .[8] He won the fight via unanimous decision and was expected to face Neil Grove in the semi-finals, but instead faced Cole Konrad. His winning streak of thirteen snapped, as he lost the fight via unanimous decision, being unable to stop the takedowns of Konrad, the future winner of the tournament.
For almost three years, Grabowski was on impressive 6- win streak winning with Joaquim Ferreira On MMA Attack, with Eddie Sanchez on MMA Attack 2, with Dave Huckaba on Bellator 67, with Stav Economou on MMA Attack 3, with Tadas Rimkevicius on M-1 Challenge 39, and with Kenny Garner on M-1 Challenge 44: Battle of Kulikovo. The last one was for the M-1 Heavyweight Championship.
During M-1 Challenge 50 (August 15, 2014), Grabowski fought against his friend, also the Polish fighter, unbeated Marcin Tybura. Tybura managed to take Grabowski down early in the first round and won the fight by mean of the north/south choke. Surprised Grabowski didn't spare the compliments for Tybura after the fight, as the championship belt left in Poland.
