Dallas Keuchel

Dallas Keuchel (KYE-kuhl) (born January 1, 1988) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball. He is a left-handed starting pitcher who was drafted in the seventh round in the 2009 MLB Draft, and made his major league debut in 2012. Following his high school career, where he led his team to the state championship, from 2007 through 2009, he attended the University of Arkansas, where he played baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. In 2014, he was awarded both the Gold Glove Award and Fielding Bible Award.

Professional career

Keuchel attended Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he led the baseball team to the state championship.^[1] He then attended the University of Arkansas, where he played college baseball for the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.

He made his MLB debut on June 17, 2012 against the Texas Rangers.^[2]

On September 14, 2014, he took a perfect game in Anaheim through 5 innings, walked Chris Ianetta in the bottom of the 6th with no outs, but eventually erased him on a double play, still not allowing a hit. In the bottom 7th with one out, Mike Trout hit a single to break up the no hitter but also got erased on a double play by Albert Pujols. Keuchel would go 7 innings allowing an earned run in the 8th. His final line in the game was 7+ innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Pitching style

Keuchel throws five pitches: a sinker (88–90), a fastball, a cutter (83–87), a curveball (69–74), and a changeup (73–76). Against right-handed hitters, Keuchel relies most heavily on his sinker and uses the rest of his pitches in roughly equal amounts. Against lefties, he rarely uses the changeup but uses the other four in roughly equal amounts. With the exception of the changeup, his pitches have below-average whiff rates,^[3] and his K/9 rate was only 3.9 through his first 70²⁄₃ innings in 2012.^{[4] [5]}
