daemontools is the "seminal process supervision toolkit"[4] written by Daniel J. Bernstein as an improvement to the inittab, /etc/ttys, init.d or rc.local alternatives, providing all of the following features.

Due to lack of ongoing maintenance for daemontools, newer tools such as runit have subsequently been preferred by some.[4]
