DHI is an independent, international consulting and research organisation.
Designations
Since 1973, DHI has been approved by the Danish Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation as an Authorised Technological Service Institute.
DHI is designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the Collaborating Center for Water and Health (since 2004) in continuation of being the WHO Collaborating Centre for Water Quality Assessment (since 1993).
It is designated as a Resource Centre for the Global Water Partnership (since 2000).
It is also designated the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Collaborating Centre for Water and Environment (since 2004) in continuation of being the UNEP Collaborating Centre for Freshwater Quality Monitoring and Assessment (since 1976).
DHI is certified as an Authorised Provider of Continuing Education Units by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training, IACET (since 2001).
History
DHI was formerly known as the Danish Hydraulic Institute.
- 1964 – the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences established Vandbygningsinstituttet/Danish Institute of Applied Hydraulics as an offspring from the Technical University of Denmark.
- 1970 – the Computational Hydraulics Centre (CHC) was established as a department with the task to develop numerical model systems.
- 1971 – the name was changed to Dansk Hydraulisk Institut/Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI).
- 1972 – DHI introduced irregular wave generation in its hydraulic model test facilities.
- 1977 – development of the European Hydrological System (later to become MikeSHE) started in co-operation with French and British partners.
- 1983 – DHI inaugurated its multidirectional wave facility and started deep water model tests for the offshore industry.
- 1983 – the first micro-computer based software (MOUSE) was developed.
- 1985 – the first release of DHI Software for PC. This started the new era of adaptation of DHI numerical models to product versions for sale.
- 1990 – the Ecological Modelling Centre was established by VKI and the Danish Hydraulic Institute as a joint department.
- 1998 – the release of DHI's software product 3D-flows, Mike 3.
From 1993 to 1998, DHI operated the International Centre for Computational Hydrodynamics (ICCH) as a research unit, receiving financial support in the form of a grant from the Danish Ministry of Research (Grundforskningscentret).
The former Institute for the Water & Environment (VKI)
- 1964 – the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences established the Committee for Industrial Waste Water, the precursor of VKI.
- 1970 – the name was changed to the Committee for Waste Water, to indicate a wider scope of activities.
- 1972 – Vandkvalitetsinstituttet/Water Quality Institute, (abbreviation in both Danish and English 'VKI') was established by the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.
- 1979 – VKI established a regional office in Århus, Jutland.
- 1981 – VKI established a Department for Aquaculture on which basis an independent Danish Aquaculture Institute was established three years later.
- 1988 – The International Agency for 14C Determination, founded in 1958, was added to VKI.
- 1990 – The Ecological Modelling Center was established by VKI and the Danish Hydraulic Institute as a joint department.
- 1996 – Center for Environment and Toxicology (CETOX) was established by VKI and DTC.
