"Déjà Vu" is a song by Romanian DJ Bob Taylor (real name Bogdan Croitoru), featuring Romanian female recording artist Inna, and was released in the summer of 2009 in Romania. The song officially appeared on Taylor's second album but was also used for Inna's debut album, Hot. The song was originally sang by Taylor and the Romanian newcomer, Alessia.[1] Released as Inna's third single from "Hot", it reached the top ten of the Romanian Top 100, peaking at number seven. The music video was shot in June 2009 and premiered in the same month on MTV Romania. In the Netherlands, it was released as Inna's second single (following her debut single "Hot"). Credited as Inna featuring Bob Taylor "Déjà Vu" was released in the U.K. and France as the third single taken from her debut album.[2] In the U.K. the radio edit of the song appeared on the British dance compilation album "Clubland 18" on November 7, 2010[3] and then was released as a Digital EP on November 14, 2010. This song is Inna's third successful single worldwide, only beyond "Hot" and "Amazing". In Romania it is her second least successful song, being one of her only two singles not to enter the top 5.

Background

In the spring of 2009, Inna collaborated with the Romanian DJ Bogdan Croitoru for his still untitled second studio album.[4] They decided to promote the song "Déjà Vu" undercover and sent their song to the mainstream radio under the names of Anni (backwards to Inna) and Bob Taylor.[5][6] After the song became a hit in Romania they confirmed officially they are the performers of the song. Inna posted an entry on her blog about the release of "Déjà Vu" stating that "A good track must be promoted and listened without knowing who wrote it or who are the vocals."[5] The song became imidiately a hit in Eastern Europe, reaching number seven on the Romanian Top 100 and peaking in the top twenty on the Airplay chart in Czech Republic (number sixteen) and the Dance Chart in Hungary (number twelve).[7] The song then was released in the Netherlands and Belgium as the second, in Spain, France and the U.K. as the third single release from Inna's debut album "Hot".

Music video

The music video for "Déjà Vu" was shot in early 2009 in Constanţa showing Bob Taylor performing in a club. Inna did not take part in the filming and does not appear in this video.[5] For the commercial release of the song in Europe, an alternative video has been released featuring Inna. It uses footage of Inna's photoshooting in Nessebar, a major seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.[8] This video was later edited for the U.K. release and is credited as Inna featuring Bob Taylor. On October 1, 2010 the music video was released to U.K. music channels to support the digital and physical release of "Déjà Vu".[9]

Chart performance

After "Hot" and "Love", "Déjà Vu" was Inna's third top ten success in her home country Romania. The song entered the Romanian Top 100 on June 17, 2009 and peaked at number seven on August 21, 2009.[10] In early 2010, after the success of her debut song "Hot" on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart, where the song peaked at number one, "Déjà Vu" entered several European charts including the Dutch Single Top 100 and the Belgium Singles Chart.

On the Spanish Singles Chart it debuted at number thirty-one on May 2, 2010 and peaked at number fifteen on August 15, 2010. With a total of twenty-six non-consecutive weeks, "Déjà Vu" became Inna's longest charting song on the top fifty.[11] In France "Déjà Vu" became yet another smash hit for Inna as the song debuted on the French Singles Chart at number six on September 11, 2010 while the predecessors "Amazing" and "Hot" simultaneously sat at number eight and thirty-nine respectively.

In the UK, "Déjà Vu" was on the compilation Clubland 18 a week before its release; therefore people were buying it digitally on iTunes a week earlier than its release date, so it only reached number 62 in the UK Singles Chart and 8 on the Dance Chart. A week later on its official release it only climbed two places to 60. So you have Clubland 18 to blame for the low chart position.

In the beginning of 2011, the song entered the Ö3 Austria Top 40, debuting at number twenty-five. This scores Inna's biggest debut in the chart, her first top forty to date and, so far, her second song to enter the chart, after "Amazing". The next week it dropped many positions, after just two weeks leaving the chart. But in late January the song re-entered the top forty, climbing towards the top thirty.

Live performance

Inna performed "Déjà Vu" live on several dates in Romania and Dubai. She has also performed the song at the Starfloor festival in France, where she accepted the platinum disc for her album "Hot". Inna performed the track live with and without Bob Taylor trought Romania, Eastern Europe and even Mainland Europe. She sung "Deja Vu" live on Fama Revolution, in Spain. She performed it live in the same country, at the Los 40 Principales awards. She has sung a short part of the chorus as an acceptance of her "Zece Pentru Romania" award. On December 28, 2010 she performed "Deja Vu" on Kasho Club, Braşov. She had also performed the song "Deja Vu" on her own at the Stage B of the NRJ Music Awards, on January 22, 2011, in Cannes, France. There she was nominated for the Révélation internationale de l'année (so the Best New Act). She lost to Justin Bieber. There, she sang "Deja Vu" along with all her previous and upcoming hits ("Hot", "Love", "Amazing", "Sun Is Up", "10 Minutes" and "We're Going in the Club"). The song was also added to the set-list of Inna's first world tour, the INNA en Concert tour. It was also performed during her I Am the Club Rocker Tour in Mexico, but only on selected dates.
