Cross of the Dutchman is an unreleased action-adventure video game by the Dutch game developer Triangle Studios.[2] about the Frisian folk hero Pier Gerlofs Donia and that would have been set in sixteenth century Western Europe.[3][4] The game was supposed to run on the Unity game engine.[5] A teaser trailer was announced[6] on January 24, 2012.[7]

Plot

Concept art for the game

The story of Cross of the Dutchman would be centered on the figure of Pier Gerlofs Donia, who went by the nickname of Grutte Pier (Big Peter, in the West Frisian language).

Pier loses everything he has to a band of Dutch and German mercenaries and invaders who have been invading and plundering his lands for many years before. In a land torn apart by civil war and horrendous crimes, bloody rebels and pirates, the story's hero vows revenge against those responsible for his personal tragedy. He embarks on an adventure to rid the lands of Frisia from foreign invaders and restore his ancient homeland to its old glory, joined in this by Charles, Duke of Guelders and his nephew and right-hand Wijerd Jelckama. Pier becomes a pirate, a rebel, a freedom fighter, a hero to the people, and earns his place in history as the Cross of the Dutchman.

Development

The game was announced in November 2009.[8] The total budget created for the game was 275,000 euros (369,160 U.S. dollars), 80,000 of which was donated by Noardwest Fryslân because of the historical nature of the game.[9] The as-yet-unreleased game has been described as having subtitles in languages including Frisian, Dutch and English.[10]

Gameplay

Cross of the Dutchman would feature a third-person view. Several kinds of attack strategies include Pier using his surroundings as a weapon, e.g. by casting debris at enemies. The player may also direct his party members in battle. The internal development of the plot depends on the player's anticipating of opposing parties.[11]
