Croonaert Wood

Croonaert Wood is a location in Heuvelland, in the vicinity of Ypres, Belgium. It is a lightly forested area usually known for the open-air museum in it.

Croonaert during World War One

Croonaert was called Bayernwald by German soldiers in the First World War due to the fact that the first German soldiers to be stationed there were from Bavaria, which is known as Bayern in German. It was a defensive complex of trenches, dugouts, and bunkers and was used to defend the area around the Ypres Salient.

Croonaert today

Currently, Croonaert Wood is a deciduous forest containing Bayernwald Trench System (replica).
