Cranbrook is a new town being developed in East Devon, initially consisting of 2,900 residential properties, rising to up to 6,550 properties by 2026,[1] with associated infrastructure to support the housing. It is located 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east-north-east of the centre of Exeter, just north of the village of Rockbeare, between the B3174 road (London Road) and the West of England Main Line railway
The requirement to build extra housing in this area formed part of Devon's 2001–2016 Structure Plan and was included in East Devon's Local Plan 1995-2001. The first houses as well as St Martin's Primary school were completed in 2012[2] and at least 500 houses had been occupied by December 2013.[3]
Accessibility and transport
The nearest railway station is at Pinhoe but a new railway station for Cranbrook is due to open in May 2015 on the Exeter - Waterloo line.[4]
Stagecoach South West buses link Cranbrook to Exeter, Honiton and Axminster.[5]
There is a cycle path connecting Cranbrook to the rest of Exeter which runs alongside Honiton Road.
Cranbrook is near Exeter International Airport, which caters to flights from over 20 countries and around 750,000 passengers annually.
Facilities
The first phase of the Cranbrook development is known as "Younghayes". A primary school (St Martin's) opened in September 2012. The Younghayes Centre is complete and is used as a meeting point for clubs, but may house a GP surgery and business units. Other facilities such as added sports and leisure centres, recreational greens, a skateboard park, playgrounds, and a town centre might follow. Cranbrook may feature a new Country Park that provides wetland habitat and native grasslands in order to advance the ecology in the area. The park might also offer public open space for the new community to use.
The second phase will include a second primary school and a secondary school.[6]
