Cover the spot is a game that involves covering a giant red spot with five smaller discs.

Rules of the game are as follows but vary on some aspects depending on who is operating the game:

  1. Hold disk 1" above board and drop.
  2. Once disk is dropped, it cannot be touched or moved.
  3. No fingers on board while dropping.
  4. If red (or color) shows, game is over.
  5. All red (or color) must be covered to win.

History

The game was originally a children's puzzle in Mongolia about 2500 years ago. Upon invasion of China, it was taken back as part of the bounty. Those who were able to win the game were deemed too educated to kill. They then became indentured servants.

From China, the game traveled throughout Asia and was adopted by gypsies who brought it to Europe. They later brought it to America and introduced it to American carnival midways.

The game was then played with tin disks with a circle painted on cheesecloth. In the early 1940s, a man by the name of Herschel Freeman acquired a patent for the die that would stamp out the disks from zinc sheets acquired from the U.S. Navy. He then placed the circle to be covered with these on a wood board via silkscreen. Mr. Freeman tried for a patent on the game but it is really a math problem, and one cannot patent a math equation.
