Coupa is a cloud-based spend management software company located in San Mateo,[2] California.
The company was founded in 2006[3] by Dave Stephens and Noah Eisner.[3] Stephens and Eisner previously worked at Oracle (enterprise procurement applications).[3] Rob Bernshteyn joined Coupa as CEO in February 2009 after serving as Vice President of Global Product Marketing and Management at SuccessFactors, Inc.[4] Former Yahoo CEO and PayPal president Scott Thompson joined the company’s board of directors in April 2013.
Coupa has been named one of North America's fastest-growing technology companies, ranking 53rd in revenue growth on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 released in November 2014.[5] The company expanded globally in 2014, announcing new operations in Dublin, Ireland;[6] Paris, France and Frankfurt, Germany. Coupa's other international operations include its offices in Australia and its EMEA headquarters in the United Kingdom. Coupa expanded its leadership and governance in 2014 with the hiring of Tara Ryan as the company's CMO and the appointment of Roger Siboni as a new member of the company's Board of Directors.
The company’s competitors include Ariba,[7][8] Oracle (which has Oracle iProcure),[9] Procurify,[10] SciQuest,[11] PROACTIS [12] Ketera[13] and SAP.[7][14]
Technology
Coupa’s Cloud Spend Optimization SaaS product manages indirect purchases, invoices and expenses in real-time.[15][16] Built on Coupa’s cloud architecture, it provides executive dashboards,[17] alerts,[16] expense management[18] and real-time benchmarking[19] into a single user interface.[17][18] This spend optimization software suite focuses on three core spend areas including procurement, accounts payable, and expense management.
Coupa is cloud-based and built on Amazon Web Services infrastructure, and it has Amazon-like features.[7][20] In 2007, the company launched a SaaS (Software-as-a-service) product called Coupa On Demand for SMBs (small and midsize businesses). This platform uses Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud Web services (EC2).[13]
Coupa’s software is based on the Ruby on Rails (RoR) platform.[8][20] With RoR, Coupa developed software that helps companies to better monitor costs[21] with less implementation time[22][23] and employee training[24] In 2006, its first free open-source product, Coupa Express, was built using RoR.[14] Coupa's application can be accessed by any user via their mobile device browser.
In November 2011, Coupa released its first spend analysis product called Coupa Spend Optimizer.[25][26] According to Coupa, this product provides spending insight to employees in both the procurement and finance sectors, with its easy-to-use interface.[27] Also, users have access to data from other platforms, like ERP or HR systems, so they have a broader understanding of spend across their companies.[28]
In August 2012, Coupa added an application called Coupa Contracts to its software suite. Companies can use the contracts repository to access their approved contracts and to leverage their negotiated pricing at the time of purchasing.
In May 2013, Coupa introduced applications Coupa Sourcing and Coupa Catalogs. The former makes it easier for companies to run sourcing events with suppliers to save money. With Coupa Catalogs, companies are able to use Coupa’s software platform as a shopping and catalog management front end to their ERP-based procurement system.
In April 2014, Coupa introduced Coupa Inventory which provides all employees in an organization real-time visibility into inventory availability while they are ordering, thus reducing wasteful spending.
In October 2014, Coupa announced an update to its applications, which includes new features to optimize spend and supply chain management in the enterprise.[29]

Coupa's cloud-based suite of financial applications includes:
- Procurement - Coupa Procurement is the industry's leading[30] procure-to-pay application that brings consumer like e-commerce shopping ease and business process flexibility to procurement. It also allows budget enforcement upfront when someone's making the purchase. It provides an up-to-date lists of all transactions that impact your budget, plus alerts to let you know when you are reaching your budget. Coupa Contracts stores all of your contracts centrally in electronic format along with the related SOWs. It allows your employees to purchase without ever knowing about the underlying contracts. It allows you to set up custom alerts and get automatic notifications of important contract management tasks.
- Invoicing - Coupa Invoicing provides AP automation for your organization and eInvoicing for creating touch-less processes. It provides various technology options to manage supplier relationships, resource optimization, capture early payment discounts, increase compliance and reduce risk.
- Expenses - Coupa Expenses provides an easy to use consumer like experience for employees to create their reports and allows the organization to have a single unified view of all their spend by tying it with procurement and invoicing.
- Sourcing - Coupa Sourcing provides capabilities to sourcing managers within a company but also brings sourcing to all the employees. It allows anyone in your organization to source easily via self-service, provides continuous recommendations for sourcing events based on intelligence it gathers from within procurement, expenses and other areas of your enterprise.
- Inventory - Coupa Inventory provides your entire organization real-time visibility into inventory availability while they are ordering thus reducing wasteful spend, so you don't order what you already have.
- Suppliers - Coupa Suppliers is free and does not charge for suppliers to transact with buyers while using Coupa. It provides options that include Portal, CXML, EDI, Email and others to facilitate the business process and transactions that flow between the buyer and supplier.
- Storefront - Coupa Storefront brings Coupa’s industry-leading[30] catalog management system to your ERP. It allows employees to purchase what they need with a familiar buying experience of an internal eCommerce site and yet enforcing the business policies
- Analytics - Coupa Analytics provides spending insight to employees in both the procurement and finance sectors, with its easy-to-use interface.[27]
Because Coupa is built on a single code-line and offers a single cloud platform it has business processes that span all of these functional areas and applications. Something that would traditionally have to be achieved using integration across multiple disparate applications in an enterprise.
Customers and Partners
As of November 2014, Coupa indicated it had 450+ customers worldwide in 40 countries and in 150 currencies, including Concentrix, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Adidas, Subway, Armstrong, Sears, Graham Packaging, BNP Paribas, TD Bank [31][32] Salesforce.com,[7] and Rent-A-Center.[2] In 2011, Coupa started working with the Independent Purchasing Cooperative (IPC) of Subway, to help its franchises in 98 countries with its cost management.[32] Salesforce.com has its sales managers use Coupa to monitor travel expenses and sales outcomes.[33] Rent-a-Center chose Coupa because the e-procurement product has an Amazon-like interface, which is easy for employees to use.[33]
Coupa has partnerships with international advisory firms. On May 10, 2013, the company announced a formal partnership with KPMG. It also has a partnerships with Deloitte, Accenture and IBM Emptoris Commerce.
In October 2014, Coupa and NetSuite (NYSE: N) announced a strategic partnership to jointly market the Coupa Cloud Procurement and Expense Management SuiteApp built for NetSuite.[34]
Funding
To-date, Coupa has raised a total of $87 million in funding.
In March 2014, Coupa raised $44 million in series F funding led by Meritech Captial, with participation from Icon Ventures, Northgate Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Battery Ventures, El Dorado Ventures and Blue Run Ventures.
In April 2012, Coupa raised $22 million in series E funding led by Crosslink Capital, with participation from Mohr Davidow Ventures, Battery Ventures, El Dorado Ventures, and Blue Run Ventures.
In 2011, Coupa raised $12 million in series D funding led by Mohr Davidow Ventures, with participation of Battery Ventures, BlueRun Ventures and El Dorado Ventures.[2][21]
In 2008, Coupa received a funding of $6 million from Battery Ventures and BlueRun Ventures.[20]
In 2007, Coupa raised the first round of funding from BlueRun Ventures,[35][36] which was later disclosed as $1.5 million.[20]
