The Counselor to the President is a high-ranking assistant to the President of the United States, and a member of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. In the administration of George W. Bush, the Counselor oversaw the Communications, Media Affairs, Speechwriting, and Press Offices. The former Counselors to the President were: Karen Hughes (2001–2002), Dan Bartlett (2002–2007), Ed Gillespie (2007–2009).

Under the Obama Administration, the position was initially abolished and the duties of the office transferred to three senior advisors: David Axelrod,^[1][2] Pete Rouse,^[2][3] and Valerie Jarrett,^[4] who is also Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Liaison.^[2] On January 6, 2011, President Obama appointed Rouse as Counselor to the President where he was responsible for assisting the President and White House Chief of Staff with the day-to-day management of White House staff operations.^[5][6] John Podesta currently holds the position, with a portfolio overseeing energy policy and the administration's efforts to combat climate change.^[7]
