The town of Cornland was laid out in 1871 by Joshua Day, soon after the completion of the Gilman, Clinton & Springfield, now the Springfield branch of the Illinois Central railroad. It was surveyed in August of that year by James M. Bourne, surveyor, and contained 16 blocks.

Jess also opened a general store in 1871, but sold out three years later. Andrew Wilkinson was the first mechanic in the town; A small grain warehouse was erected in 1871, which was succeeded by a large elevator in 1876. A school house was erected in 1877. In 1875, the Methodists built a church and the same year the Christian society moved a church edifice into the town from a point three miles north of town.
