Conviva
Conviva is a venture-backed, privately held company, offering solutions for online video optimization and online video analytics.[1][2][3] Conviva is headquartered in Silicon Valley with offices in New York and London.[4] The translation of Conviva in the Spanish language is “to co-exist in harmony”.[5]
History
The company was founded as Rinera Networks in 2006 by Dr. Hui Zhang and Dr. Ion Stoica both Carnegie Mellon alumni.[6][7] The company changed its name from Rinera Networks to Conviva in April 2008.[8] Conviva has raised a total of $59 million, with $44 million from Foundation Capital, GGV,[9] New Enterprise Associates and Pelion Venture Partners[10][11] and $15 million from Time Warner Investments in February 2012.[12] In 2011, the founders received the ‘Test of Time’ award at the 2011 annual ACM SigComm Doctoral Dissertation Competition for their dissertation, "Understanding the impact of video quality on User engagement."[13] In July 2012, Conviva won AlwaysOn Global 250 top private innovative technology companies.[14]
Technology
Conviva sells a control platform said to pre-emptively locate video streaming issues and make adjustments to avoid buffering and low quality. Conviva also provides online video analytics on viewer engagement and video performance.[15][16]
In February 2013, Conviva launched a Viewer Experience Report, analyzing 22.6 billion streams globally throughout 2012. Conviva’s data discovered that 39.9% of their customer’s online video streams experienced buffering in 2012.[17][18] Their data claimed that on average audiences watch 250% more video when there's lower buffering, quicker start time and higher bitrate.[19]
In 2013, Conviva analyzed global data from 45 billion video streams, seen across more than 1.6 billion individual devices and on more than 400 premium media video players. .[20]

Conviva works with media brands including HBO[21] ESPN, AEG, Vevo, NBC, Turner, Disney,[17] and Yahoo[22] The company has worked on live streaming events including The Super Bowl,[23] 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics,[24] March Madness,[25] Wimbledon, and The Masters,[26] In February 2013, Conviva announced a six-year agreement with HBO GO to provide data and video delivery optimization for their HBO GO TV Everywhere platform.[21]
Conviva has partnerships with leading Online Video Platform (OVP) companies including Brightcove,[27] thePlatform [28] and others. Conviva also partners with content delivery networks (CDN) including Limelight Networks [29]
