Competition, Missouri

Competition is an unincorporated community in southern Laclede County, Missouri, United States. It is about seventeen miles southeast of Lebanon. Early on, it was known as Newburg, or "The Burg" as it was known to its residents. When the post office was established, the name was changed because a city named Newburg already existed in Phelps County, Missouri. Thus, the name was changed to Competition. Its post office was closed, mail now comes from Falcon.

The community was founded in 1867. However graves that can be found at the Porter Chapel Church in Competition, date back from 1820. A cemetery on private property in Competition holds graves dating from 1785. A school for grades 1 through 12 was established in the area at the start of the 20th century. The high school was closed in 1951, however the elementary school 1st through 8th grade remained open until the 1990's.
