Community College of Denver

Community College of Denver (CCD) is a community college located in Denver, Colorado, United States. The main campus is at Auraria Campus, and it has two other locations in the Denver metropolitan area. CCD focuses on underserved, first-generation and minority students. In 2008-2009, nearly 60% of CCD students were first-generation and 90% qualified for financial aid.

About Community College of Denver

One of 13 institutions in the Colorado Community College System, CCD is a point of entry to higher education for the City and County of Denver. ^[2]

CCD is recognized nationally for its success in recruiting, enrolling and retaining first-generation, low income and minority college students. The college also sees students through to graduation or transfer to a four-year institution. CCD offers two-year programs and awards two-year degrees and certificates.^[3]

History

Originally established in 1967 for the Colorado Legislature, CCD is housed in the oldest neighborhood in Denver. The campus, known as The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) was completed in 1976 and accommodates three colleges: CCD, Metropolitan State University of Denver and University of Colorado Denver. In 1985 CCD North opened on Downing Street, six miles northeast of Auraria. CCD North houses the trade programs of welding and precision machining. The Nursing and Allied Health programs are located on the Lowry Campus, formerly Lowry Air Force Base. ^{[4] [5]}

Enrollment

It has over 12,000 students, and as of 2009 was one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. It is part of the Colorado Community College System which has experienced 26% growth year-over-year (2007–2009).^{[6][7] [8] [9]}

Academic programs

A college of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS), Community College of Denver (CCD) is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in Colorado. It is an "open door" higher education institution, offering four degrees: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, and Associate of General Studies. With more than 100 areas of study in subject areas ranging from articulation and transfer, general education, career and technical education, to health sciences and nursing, Community College of Denver awards more than 700 associate degrees and certificates annually, serving almost 12,000 students per semester.

Courses can be taken on campus and, in many cases, online. The numerous academic subject areas fall under the broader categories of Business, Criminal Justice, Education, Engineering, Engineering Graphics, Health, Human Services, Information Technology, Liberal Arts & Behavioral Sciences, Machine Technologies, Math & Science, Visual & Performing Arts, and Welding Fabrication. In addition, CCD offers special programs such as its College Pathways precollegiate office for early enrollment of high school students, and FastStart@CCD, a program for adults who need fast-track developmental courses in reading, English and math. ^[10]

CCD is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission which is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). CCD participates in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). ^[14]
