Comilla Medical College is a government-sponsored medical college near Kuchaitoli in Comilla, Bangladesh. Construction began in 1979, with the college open for one year from 1981-1982 before it closed for a decade. Reopened in 1992 due to local demand, the college offers MBBS degrees.[1][2]
History
The foundation stone of Comilla Medical College was laid by president Zia on 28 November 1979. Only 30 students were admitted in the session 1981-82 but its academic activity stopped in 1982 & students were transferred to different government Medical College. Due to the continuous demand of local people, Bangladesh Medical Association & political leaders, Comilla Medical College Restart it’s function in 1992 based on the infrastructure of Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) & 250 bed Modernized Hospital, Comilla . All facilities of MATS including manpower merged with Medical College. 50 students were admitted in the session 1991-92. The number of students was doubled to 100 from the session 2005-2006 & admitted of students 113 from the session 2011-2012. Now MATS has been shifted to another campus. The new academic building of the college functionally started in the year 2008.
Professor Habibur Rahman Ansary as Principal & nine other teachers started classes of 1st Year MBBS in August 1992 for the first time. Comilla Medical College campus is free of student politics from the very beginning. A non-political congenial educational atmosphere helped in achieving outstanding academic excellences of this college without any session jam. Extra academic, cultural & social welfare activities are performed by “Chatra Kallayan Parishad” governed by the Academic Council.
It is a public institution affiliated by Chittagong University. It is situated in Kuchaitali which is 5 kilometer south east from Comilla town & 100 kilometer south east from capital city Dhaka. H.S.C / A level or equivalent examination passed candidates are selected centrally through a competitive admission test every year conducted by DG Health. Students from foreign countries are also selected for admission in this college from session 2005-2006. Seven Pakistani students, Five Nepali Students & One Indian Students are in course now. Medium of teaching is English. Total 22 batch of students are admitted of which 16 batches already completed their graduation as MBBS.
About 865 students are graduated from this Medical College. A good no of students have acquired post graduate degree who are serving in different medical institutions of our country and abroad. From June’ 2012 post graduate course started under BSMMU.
A Medical Education Unit is functioning to update teachers and to supply teaching materials. The teachers of Comilla Medical College are not involved in party politics. but for the improvement of professional knowledge & skill a teachers association is functioning. A Medical Journal is published half yearly by teachers association.
Budgetary allocation for construction, maintenance, repair and energy supply is not sufficient but recently we have proposed the revised budget to the competent authority. Authority agreed to increase the allocation.
Land area of the college campus is 25.09 Acres. Now 565 students are enrolled of which 305 are female & 260 are male. College building area is about 1,86,000 Sq. ft. & Hospital building area is about 2,70,000 Sq. ft. Total 30 departments are running in the college & Hospital. One Principal, One Vice-Principal, 22 Professor, 33 Associated Professor, 41Assistant Professor, 2 Curator & 37 Lecturer are the teacher & faculty member of the institution. Two female hostel, two boys hostel, two internee hostel, one Nurses Training Centre, One Nuclear Medicine Centre, One Morgue, Staff Quarters, Mosque & a playground are there in the campus. The library of this college is fully air-conditioned which is enriched with on-line section containing 7,967 books & 3,068 journals.
The attached Medical College Hospital is a 500 bed academic hospital. After passing final professional MBBS examination, students of this college complete one year internship training in this hospital. Graduate doctors of different post graduate course are taking training in this hospitals & Government & Non-Government Graduate Doctor’s are taking training in this institute. Some doctors are getting honorary post graduate training also & Post graduate diploma under Banggabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University will start from july’2012. People of greater Comilla & greater Noakhali gets all investigation & treatment facilities from out patient & inpatient departments of this hospital.
