Combat of Giants: Dragons, known as Battle of Giants: Dragons in North America, is a video game in the Combat of Giants series developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft in 2009 for the Nintendo DS.
Plot
An extensive war between dragons and humans caused the Lord of all Dragons, Ninnurtu, to gather the noble Ebebu dragons and the foul Salmu dragons and combine their powers to create Tammabuku, their own world in which they could have peace.
However, the Salmu dragons stole the gems of the Ebebu dragons which were the power source of all dragons and Ninnurtu was left powerless from creating the world. The Players, who were the last Ebebu dragons, had to win back all of the gems stolen by the Salmu dragons and continue Ninnurtu's legacy as the Lord of all Dragons.
Dragons
There are seven known types of dragons, five of which are playable. Each dragons have distinct elements and bonus attributes for combat. The first four dragons can be customized by entering certain Caves.
- Fire dragon - Extra damage bonus
- Ice dragon - Heal bonus
- Earth dragon - Poison bonus
- Wind dragon - Regeneration bonus
- Ebebu dragon - The Player's true form before changing to other dragons. Playable during certain parts of the game.
- Salmu dragon - The enemy dragons that The Player must fight in order to reclaim the stolen gems. Some of these dragons do not bear gems and avoiding them is recommended, unless necessary. There are 2 types of boss versions of these opponents. Ambushers hide in caves when the player comes looking for gems. Dragon lords are fought at the end of the final level after their semi final task.
- Dragon lord - NPC dragon that guides the Player throughout the game. He becomes the final boss of the game.
Gameplay
The HUD consists of Health bar and Dirga orbs (Energy count) that replenishes slowly by itself in and out of combat, or by gathering green and blue orbs floating in the environment or during fights. Dirga orbs are used to perform Special Attacks using the gems. Bigger gems cost more Dirga, but deal more damage.
The gameplay is divided into two parts: Exploration and Gameplay. Exploration mode allows the Player to freely roam in an area to complete objectives, unlock certain areas, fight Salmu dragons, and enter a secret Cave to fight a secret/ ambush/ lord Boss. When the Player gets too close to an opponent dragon, the Combat mode is triggered. Combat mode is a turn-based fight where the Player can either attack, block or dodge to gain Dirga necessary to use Special Attacks from the gems.
The game uses touchscreen extensively through gestures. Be it Exploration or Combat mode. Here are the examples:
Exploration Mode
- Touch and hold where the dragon moves to.
- Double tap to fly/land (stomp)
- Rub on the dragon to charge up and breathe fire
Combat Mode
- Flick upwards to attack
- Flick sideways to dodge
- Flick downwards to block
- Double tap to fly/land, also useful for dodging
- Connect the dots presented onscreen after selecting a Special Attack.
Card Game
Each copy of the game comes with a booster pack containing cards. There are "dragon" cards and "gem" cards. The dragons are based on the dragons that you fight within the game in terms of appearance and names. The gem cards have 15-character codes that can be entered into the game to acquire powerful Gold gems.
