Cook PVI | D+1 |
Colorado's 6th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Colorado. Located in central Colorado, the district encompasses much of the southern part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area, including the suburbs of Littleton, Centennial and portions of Aurora. Redistricting in 2012 added some suburbs to the north of Denver including Brighton and Henderson.
The district is currently represented by Republican Michael Coffman, the former Colorado Secretary of State, and is one of the wealthiest congressional districts in the country with a median income of $73,393.[1]
Historically, this was a Republican safe seat since 1983; the district regularly sent conservative representatives with large vote percentages, being the district of prominent Republican Tom Tancredo: his successor, Michael Coffman, carried the 2008 and 2010 elections with 61 and 66% of the vote. However, population growth in the Denver area has caused the district to shrink and shift north, losing the Republican strongholds of Douglas and Elbert Counties outside of Highlands Ranch, now the main Republican voter base in the district and gaining all of Aurora in northwestern Arapahoe County, a suburban stronghold for the Democrats. Due to redistricting, the district is now a marginal swing seat: this was seen at the 2012 elections, where Coffman barely defeated Democrat Joe Miklosi by 2 percentage points.
History
1990s
Following the 1990 U.S. Census and associated realignment of Colorado congressional districts, the 6th Congressional district consisted of portions of Arapahoe and Jefferson counties.
2000s
Following the 2000 U.S. Census and associated realignment of Colorado congressional districts, the 6th Congressional district consisted of Douglas and Elbert counties as well as portions of Arapahoe, Jefferson, and Park counties.
2010s
During the 2010 Colorado Redistricting, the 6th Congressional district lost most of its current area; the district now consists of the western portions of Arapahoe and Adams counties plus the community of Highlands Ranch in Douglas County.
