The College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital (also known as Sagar Dutta Medical College) is a tertiary referral government hospital, medical college and research institute in the state of West Bengal, India. It has been set up by the Government of West Bengal in 2010 and started M.B.B.S. courses from 2011 to reduce the shortfall of doctors in the state. It is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences^[1] and permitted by Medical Council of India(M.C.I.).^[2]

Establishment

Considering the dearth of Medical Professionals in West Bengal with the Doctor:Population ratio of 1:2600, Government of West Bengal decided to start a new Medical College of 100 MBBS student capacity, in a strategic location of Kamarhati, which is the gateway of North Kolkata. The main objective was to cater mainly to the rural population of West Bengal and particularly to reduce the overcrowding of the existing Medical Colleges of Kolkata. Moreover, this Medical College will become the main referral centre for the neighbouring Districts of North Kolkata in future and is planned to be the biggest state-run medical college of West Bengal.

In 2010, the Government of West Bengal issued a memo in which a sanction was accorded to set up a medical college, with an intake of 100 MBBS students, in the campus of the Sagore Dutt Hospital.^[3] Sogore Dutt Charitable Hospital and Dispensary initially started as a philanthropic organization with an objective of all round health care of the poor peasants and industrial workers of Kamarhati and adjoining areas. Its immense service to fulfill the objectives was recognized when the then Medical Secretary, Dr. Anderson, on his India tour, visited ‘a rural hospital and dispensary situated outside Calcutta, the Sogore Dutt Charitable Hospital and Dispensary’ in January, 1937.^[4] The institute was taken over by the Government of West Bengal when it passed the Sagore Dutt Hospital Act,1958.^[5]

After the inspection by M.C.I. team in 2011, Letter of Permission was received by the Authority of College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital on 30/06/2011 . Classes for the First Year commenced on 01/08/2011. The college has received the Renewal of Permission for 2nd and 3rd Batches and also for the 4th batch of 100 MBBS Students by MCI for the Academic Year 2014-15.^[6]

The DMLT and DRD courses started in the Academic Year 2014-15.

Location

ESI Hospital, Kamarhati

Located near Kamarhati bus terminus on B.T. Road, the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital is adjacent to the Kamarhati E.S.I. Hospital.

Kamarhati is a city and a municipality under Belghoria police station of Barrackpore subdivision in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. Kamarhati is located at 22.67°N 88.37°E, a part of the urban agglomeration of the metro of Kolkata. It is an assembly constituency of West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The sacred temple of Dakshineshwar is situated in Kamarhati Municipal area. Towns like Belghoria and Ariadaha are part of Kamarhati.^[7]

As of 2001 India census, Kamarhati had a population of 314,334. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Kamarhati has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 72%. In Kamarhati, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The nearest airport (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport) is located 12 km away and the nearest railway station (Agarpara Station) is located 2.2 km away.

Courses offered

Under Graduate:

• MBBS (4.5 years course + 1 year Compulsory Rotatory Internship)

Diploma:

• DMLT(Tech) - Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (2 years course + 6 months compulsory Post-Examination Practical Training)
• DRD(Tech) - Diploma in Radiology (2 years course + 6 months compulsory Post-Examination Practical Training)^[8]

Admission

Admission to the MBBS course is undertaken by W.B.M.C.C. according to the rank list of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE)^[9] and All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), the latter accounting for 15% of the seats. Admission to Diploma courses is undertaken by S.M.F.W.B. according to marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

• The total campus area is 17.63 acres.^[10]
• The present four-storey hospital building houses 131 beds along with 310 beds of ESI hospital.
• Fair price medicine shop is present.
• The present hospital building also contains the first year departments along with two lecture theatres.
• Most of the faculties of the college are from prominent medical colleges like Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, Calcutta National Medical College, IPGMER and SSKM Hospital and R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
• The Central Library in the new academic building houses a large number of books and has high-speed internet facility.
• The eight-storey new academic building and six-storey new hospital buildings are nearing completion and are partly functional.
• The new hospital boasts of a highly advanced 1.5 tesla M.R.I. machine, the first of its kind and the most advanced one amongst other medical colleges of West Bengal.
• Hospital Blood Bank is also present.
• Separate hostels for boys and girls with option for availing cable broadband internet.
• Hostel for Interns.
• Residential quarters are under-construction.
• The canteen serves both veg and non-veg foods of various types.
