College of Medallists

The College of Medallists comprises the recipients of The Sir Misha Black Medal for Distinguished Services in Design Education, one of two awards that commemorates Professor Sir Misha Black, whose pioneering work played a crucial role in the development of design in Britain. The College of Medallists was established in 1978 by the Design and Industries Association, the Royal College of Art (RCA), the faculty of Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) at the RSA, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

2007 Alison Chitty RDI UK Alison Chitty OBE is an Oliver-Award-winning production designer and set and costume designer, known for her collaborations with Mike Leigh, Francesca Zambello and Sir Peter Hall.
2006 Prof. Geoffrey Kirk RDI UK Geoffrey Kirk is an internationally recognized designer, who has worked for institutions such as Rolls-Royce.
2005 Prof. David M. Kelley US David M. Kelley is an American businessman, entrepreneur, designer, engineer and teacher. He is founder, chairman and managing partner of the design firm IDEO and a professor at Stanford University.
2004 Elaine Ostroff US Elaine Ostroff is a renowned figure in design education. In 1992, Ostroff set up the Universal Design Education Project, working with faculty from 25 colleges and universities across the United States, while simultaneously helping to introduce similar schemes in Europe and Asia.
2004 Prof. David Hamilton (Honorary) UK David Hamilton is a Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art after decades of education in ceramics.

1995 Kenji Ekuan Japan Kenji Ekuan was a prominent Japanese designer who among other achievements served as the head of "Design for the World", the Japan Industrial Designers Association and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. He was one of the founders of the core group that became GK Design.
1993 Arthur Pulos US Arthur Pulos was an industrial designer, author and educator who served as chairman of the department of design at the Syracuse University.
1993 Dr Marianne Straub RDI UK Marianne Straub was one of the leading designers of textiles in Britain during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
1991 David Pye UK David Pye OBE was a Professor of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art.
1988 Peter Reyner Banham UK Reyner Banham was an English architectural critic and prolific writer best known for his theoretical treatise Theory and Design in the First Machine Age (1960) and for his 1971 book Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies.[5]
1986 Frank Height UK ″Frank Height″ was an industrial designer and educator who served as Professor Emeritus in Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art.
1985 Ashoke Chatterjee India Ashoke Chatterjee was executive director of National Institute of Design (NID) from 1975 to 1985, and thanks to his input, the NID in Ahmedabad became internationally recognised as one of the foremost institutions in the field of design education, research and training.
1982 Max Bill Switzerland Max Bill was a Swiss architect, artist, painter, typeface designer, industrial designer and graphic designer.
1980 Serge Ivan Chermayeff US Ivan Chermayeff was a Russian born, British architect industrial designer, writer and co-founder of several architectural societies, including the American Society of Planners and Architects.
