Cochuah

Cochuah is the name of one of the sixteen Mayan provinces into which the central Yucatán Peninsula was divided at the time of the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century.[1]

After the destruction of Mayapán (1441-1461), in the Yucatan Peninsula, the rivalries between the different Mayan groups, and they formed sixteen "Kuchkabal" or provinces. Each kuchkabal was headed by a "halach uinik", who had full military, judicial, and political authority, and who lived in the principal city of their province, which was regarded as the province's capitol.
