It is the seventh largest district in Tennessee and has earned whole district accreditation. CMCSS is also ISO 9001 certified. Dr. B.J. Worthington is the Director of Schools.

There are 38 schools in the district serving approximately 32,000 children from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade: one K-5 magnet school, 22 elementary, 7 middle, 7 high, and one middle college.[2] It employs about 3,900 teachers, administrators and support staff.
