The City Sound Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class (formerly Divisions II & III) competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Long Beach, California, City Sound performs in Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions.[1]

History

City Sound was founded in June, 1997 by current director Nathaniel Lewis, Jr. as an indoor winter drum line. His intent was to give teens and young adults from "diverse cultures" with performance opportunities lacking in many California schools.

By 2010, the corps had added a horn line and color guard and become a full drum and bugle corps, performing in DCI contests within California..

City sound is a Boy Scouts "Learning for Life" Explorer Post and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America, Learning For Life, Character Education Quality Award for 2013.[2]

Since 2013, members of City Sound have been able to receive college credit (Music 159) through California State University Dominguez Hills for marching in the corps for one season.[3][4]

In November, 2012, City Sound's drum line was featured on the Disney Channel's Shake It Up.[5]

In 2014, City Sound traveled out of their home state of California for the first time as a corps, competing at the Southwest Corps Connection in Mesa, Arizona.

Sponsorship

City Sound is sponsored by Los Angeles Youth Arts Organization, a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) musical organization which has a Board of Directors, director, and staff assigned to carry out the organization's mission. The president of the board and corps director is Nathaniel Lewis, Jr.[6][7]
