City Montessori School (CMS) (Hindi: सिटी मॉन्टेसरी स्कूल, लखनऊ) is a private school that offers education up to the level of under-graduation, in Lucknow, India. The school was founded in 1959 by Bharti Gandhi and Jagdish Gandhi. In 2015 its enrollment has reached over 50,000 pupils, a world record.[1] CMS is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. The school has been ranked 6th in the "most respected secondary schools" in India list compiled by IMRB in 2007 and has received numerous awards.[2]

Background

The husband and wife duo of Jagdish Gandhi (b. 10 November 1936)[3] and Bharti Gandhi founded the City Montessori School. Currently CMS has 20 separate branch campuses spread across the city. In 2002 CMS was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education, the first school in the world to be honoured as such. [4][5][6]
