Chulman (Russian: Чульман) is an urban locality (a settlement) in Neryungrinsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the Chulman River, about 30 kilometers (19 mi) north of Neryungri. Population: 9,766(2010 Census);[1] 10,782(2002 Census);[3] 17,354(1989 Census).[4]

Geography

There is a deep gorge to the east with white cliffs.

History

It was founded with nineteen inhabitants in 1926. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, it was the location of a gulag work camp.

Economy

Employment in Chulman is mainly reliant on the mining of coal, granite and gemstones, as well as a power station.

Transportation

The settlement is served by the Chulman Airport[5] and is a station on the Amur Yakutsk Mainline.

Climate

Chulman has a subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification Dfc/Dwc). Winters are bitterly cold with average temperatures from −33.9 °C (−29.0 °F) to −26.7 °C (−16.1 °F) in January, while summers are mild with average temperatures from +10.9 °C (51.6 °F) to +21.8 °C (71.2 °F) in July. Precipitation is moderate and is much higher in summer than at other times of the year.
