Christchurch East School is located in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand.

History

The school was founded in 1873. From 1875 to 1878, Henry Hill was its headmaster,[3] and his wife Emily Hill was head of the infants' department.[4] The school had its centennial celebrations from 5 to 7 October 1973.[5] Avonside School became part of this school at some point.[6]

In March 2009, education minister Anne Tolley announced $41 million for school buildings, distributed to 81 schools around the country through the first allocation of property funding under the government’s recently announced infrastructure package to address lack of space or need for new school buildings. Christchurch East School is one of the recipients.[7]

The school was considered likely to be damaged in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake,[8] but it escaped major damage.
