Chokurdakh (Russian: Чокурда́х, Sakha: Чокуурдаах) is an urban locality (a settlement) and the administrative centre of Allaikhovsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia. Population: 2,367(2010 Census);[1] 2,591(2002 Census);[4] 3,845(1989 Census).[5]

Geography

The settlement lies on the left bank of the Indigirka River, below its confluence with its tributary the Allaikha.

History

Chokurdakh was founded in 1936 as the new administrative centre of the Allaikhovsky District, which had been created in 1931. It served as a river port on the Indigirka, connecting to sea traffic using the Northern Sea Route.

Economy and infrastructure

Chokurdakh is not connected with the outside world by any year-round roads. A winter road follows the Indigirka upstream when it is frozen, travelling partly along the river ice, leading to Ust-Nera via Belaya Gora and Khonuu.

The settlement is served by the Chokurdakh Airport, one of the most northerly airports in Russia and only usable for around 3 months each year.

Climate

Chokurdakh has an extreme subarctic climate, bordering on a polar climate. Temperatures have never risen above zero from November through to March.
