People's Republic of China Travel Document (Chinese: 中华人民共和国旅行证; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó Lǚxíngzhèng), formerly known as People's Republic of China Travel Permit, is a travel document issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China to people who are considered to be Chinese nationals for their travel to China and other countries.

Use cases

The Travel Document is issued to citizens of the People's Republic of China in situations when it is inconvenient or unnecessary to issue a People's Republic of China passport.^[1] Some cases where it is used include:

• Chinese citizens residing in mainland China who are traveling abroad who have lost their passport may apply this document as emergency passport for returning to China.
• Permanent residents of Hong Kong and Macau intending to enter mainland China directly from other countries without holding a Home Return Permit.
• Citizens of Taiwan intending to enter mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau directly from other countries without holding a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents. (The P.R.C. regards Taiwan as part of its territory and Taiwanese citizens to be Chinese citizens.)
• Children of Chinese citizens born abroad who acquire Chinese citizenship at birth in accordance with the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China by the jus sanguinis principle. The Chinese Travel Document may be issued to them as a Chinese identification and travel document.

Application regulations

The applicant shall approach any of the diplomatic missions of China in person to file the application. The application fee is about USD $25.
