Chile – Indonesia relations refers to international relations between Chile and Indonesia. The two nations are both members within the Non-Aligned Movement, the United Nations, the WTO, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Intergovernmental Council of Copper Exporting Countries, and the Cairns Group. Indonesia maintains an embassy in Santiago.[1] Chile maintains an embassy in Jakarta.[2]

History

Bilateral relations between Chile and Indonesia were established in 1964. These relations were strengthened by the establishment of the Indonesian embassy in in Santiago in March 1991.


High level visits

On April 28, 2004 Chilean President, Ricardo Lagos Escobar visited Indonesia. Later, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made a state visit to Santiago for the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting from 18 to 21 November 2004. Aside from presidential visits, Then-Chilean Deputy Foreign Minister, Alberto van Klaveren Stork also visited Indonesia on 1 May 2007. Then-Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda made a visit to Chile on 28 August 2007.

Economic relations

Chile is one of Indonesia's main trading partners in South America. Based on a market survey conducted by the Indonesian Embassy in Santiago, Indonesia's main export commodities to Chile include chemical products, rubber and rubber products, textiles, coal, electronic components, computer hardware, apparels, food products and glassware. Indonesian products within the Chilean market include handicrafts and souvenir objects, construction materials, pharmaceutical products, automotive accessories and spare parts, kitchen sets, plastic ware.

Meanwhile, Indonesia imports iron, chemicals, pulp, fish products, copper cathode, blank coins, grapes, kiwi fruit, wine, aluminum products, and other mining products. Trade balance of Indonesia and Chile from the period of January–July 2007 shows a deficit of US$ 22,519,486.17 to Indonesia which caused by the surge of Chilean main export commodities such as copper and iron in the international commodities market.

Culture

Social and cultural activities of Indonesia and Chile have shown an encouraging development through the active role of embassies of both countries. Both Embassies have made numerous programs in introducing the two countries' culture to the local communities. In this respect, the Indonesian Embassy in Santiago has provided various assistances to Sekolah Republik Indonesia (School of the Republic of Indonesia), an elementary school in Santiago. Meanwhile, the Embassy of Chile in Jakarta has also forwarded its assistance to Cempaka Putih Handicapped School, in regard to its infrastructure development.
