Academic testing scores

Michigan currently uses the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in ninth grade in social studies. The goal of the standards-based test is for all students to score at or above the proficient level. The state average for Social Studies was 71% in 2010. That same year CHS had a 92% proficiency, which has been nearly constant since 2007.[4] The Michigan Merit Examination (MME) is also used to assess students in grade 11 in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard. Since 2007, the percent of students at or above proficient for CHS has decreased; however, 2010 showed a sharp increase ranging from 2 - 6% compared to 2007 and 6 - 20% from the previous year.[5] The Michigan Department of Education gave Chelsea High School a Composite Grade of "B" in 2007-2008.

Controversies

In the 2010-2011 school year, CHS enforced a new policy that requires students to pay a $25 fee to participate in clubs and $100 fee to play sports.
