"Chasing Time" is a song by American rapper Azealia Banks, released as the fourth single from her debut studio album, Broke with Expensive Taste (2014).[1] A remix competition for the song was held, in which a $10,000 cash prize was awarded to the winning entry, and also released as the first official remix to the single.[2] The winner was officially announced as Amorphous on January 12th, 2015.

Pitchfork Media included the song on their "100 Best Tracks of 2014" list.[3]

Composition

"Chasing Time" was described as dance-pop by The Quietus and Rolling Stone.[4][5] Another writer from Rolling Stone called it a house track.[6] Suzy Exposito for Rolling Stone and Nick Diver from Clash, meanwhile, noted elements of UK garage, deep house and jazz on the track.[7][8] Billboard 's Collin Stutz labelled the song a hybrid of hip hop and pop.[9]

Critical reception

"Chasing Time" received positive reviews from music critics. Mike Wass of Idolator said "is something of a return to form for the struggling femcee. She switches things up by singing (as opposed to rapping) the vast majority of the song and genuinely shines in the soaring chorus. Can someone please build Azealia a time machine, so she can start again and launch this album in a non-farcical manner?".[10] Billboard called the song "catchy, crisp new single".[11] Nina Corcoran of Under the Gun Review said "her long-form notes over the dance club beats show Banks is truly ready to run the gamut. If she wanted to prove she’s more than just a New York girl who can speak faster than your 13-year-old cousin, she is."[12] Rolling Stone praised the production but criticized the lyric content, noting "the keyboards stab, the beats trip along wonderfully and the vocals surge but Banks doesn't smooth over her lyrical intricacy or emotional complexity, slinging lines like You think I'm starting new relations/I'm just apart and need my space and/Time to myself, ventilation while re-imagining I Will Survive in her own all-fire image."[13]
