Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is an independent professional body and a registered charity, advancing the science and practice of water and environmental management for a clean, green and sustainable world.

Background

History

CIWEM came into being in 1987 when the Institution of Public Health Engineers merged with the Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists and the Institute of Water Pollution Control to form the Institution of Water and Environmental Management. Through these earlier groups, the Institution has a history of working in environmental management dating back to 1895. CIWEM was granted a Royal Charter in 1995 and celebrated its centenary in the same year. CIWEM is also licensed by the Science Council to award Chartered Scientist status to qualifying members.

CIWEM Awards

Environmental Photographer of the Year

CIWEM runs what is currently called the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition, which was established in 2007.[1] According to CIWEM's website the competition seeks to provide an opportunity for photographers and filmmakers to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences and enhance understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality.

There are separate categories, each with winners and a shortlist, and one overall winner who is designated Environmental Photographer of the Year. Winners receive cash prizes, and the Forestry Commission England Exhibition Award winner receives a solo show at one of England's public forests. The winning and shortlisted photographs and films are featured in an exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society in London, which then tours in the UK.
